"Yo-yo ma's version sounds flat, incomplete and passionless." That's an unfair assessment. Yo-yo Ma's version is most certainly not flat and passionless. IMO, he plays with a DIFFERENT KIND of passion. A darker, more melancholic tone. Whereas Rostropovich is more exuberant and illicits a different emotion, one that which you might identify more with. Don't mistaken difference in approach with difference in ability.

MR is my favorite overall, but Pablo Casals had even more passion for Bach, despite his inferior bowing..Just my opinion.

That's what I thought. This is certainly the definitive recording. The greatest cellist, playing the greatest pieces of the greatest composer, with one of the best instruments ever made. It can't get any better than this.

Yes is it is one of the Stradivarius Celli that he is playing. It is named "Duport". That particular Cello was built made in 1711.

Is that the stradivarius he's playing? can anyone tell for sure? Yo-yo ma ain't got shit on Slava. When you listen to yo-yo ma at first it sounds amazing. However, after you listen to Rostropovich it's easy to tell that Yo-yo ma's version sounds flat, incomplete and passionless.

Rostropovich plays it flawlessly. I'd take Bach's passion over Yo-yo Ma's any day.

I tend to agree with you. I think that Yo-yo ma is a more passionate and expressive player, but for the baroque etiquette and stylization of this particular piece, I think that Rostropovich does a more accurate interpretation of this piece. I do enjoy both cellists for different reasons however.

..which is pretty much "wrong". This piece is baroque, making it not to be played with ritardando where none is given in the score. Yo-Yo ma plays ritardando almost everywhere. And there is pretty much none in the score. Personally I don't even find Yo-Yo mas playing very "soulful". I find it overly dramatic making it more of a parody of the interpretation itself than an actual Bach-fitting interpretation.
