The problem with the smart car is not the rigidity and crumple zones, its the mass, or lack thereof... you hit anything with substantially greater mass and the g-shock is going to be far greater in the Smartcar... that is what would kill you. The lack of large crumple zones to dissapate energy (relying more on the rigidity of the shell) makes matters worse. At least they point this out in the video.

He didnt even get caught, they lied. Look at 2:11ish, they just relooped it at the end and slowed it down and deleted the time code where they said he broke down. There are so many faults with this, it isnt supercharged and it doesnt have 240 hp, and doesnt do 0-60 in 5.7. They put more people in danger than he did. This why cops should just let people go. I love Arcade Fire like crazy, but I've seen several live performances where Will Butler just loses it. I hate when musicians think its cool to break things, especially their instruments. Its just sad. I don't care if its a shitty 300 dollar guitar you're breaking on stage, its still a guitar, and it deserves at least a little respect...as do camera operators.....(sorry, this probably belongs at a different video, where he actually does break a guitar...there's a few)

In order to have electric cars to be a competative with combustion engine vehicles somebody (a company or the gov't) are going to have to build new or convert older infrastructure to support a new fleet of vehicles. Everytime you flip the lights on in your house you pay an energy bill. Everytime you use the stove you are paying a gas utility bill. I can only hope "they'll" set up Energy stations instead of more Gas stations. The key is lesser or no emissions and cheaper, renewable energy.

I find it strange how this guy can come forward all of a sudden and challenge the oil companies, there's got to be some kind of control scheme here. This guy would be SHOT if he tried to cross the oil companies, so he must be connected AND supplying profits to those corporate interests. Something about this is smells really bad. Well at 2.7p per mile, and 0-60 in 3.8 seconds, it is kinda tempting :) I love that electric car makers have woken up to the fact no one will like them until they out perform the best of petrol... Just looking into the stats, there's no way petrol can keep up with what's coming... no physical gearbox (wheel drive), 96% efficient motors, massive torque from start... full charge in 10 mins (British Lightning tech) it's the end for petrol within 10 years I reckon...

There are so many factors to consider with this. Motor load, wind resistance, mechanical resistance, and the fact that 30% power will still accelerate the car. You use about 2-7% to maintain average highway speeds. A study several years ago showed that a large American pickup truck only needed around 15 horsepower(roughly 12kw) to maintain 55mph. 53kWh/12kW=4.41h run time. At 55mph this equals 242.55mi. I'm guessing this is very close to what the Tesla uses.
