So did blues, blue grass, etc etc. Both White and Black southern and Appalachian music along with Irish influence made American music long before the Beatles came along. If you dont think that The Beatles are the Measuring stick for pop/rock then you dont have any critical knowledge of modern music. The beatles single handedly legitimized the pop/rock as a art form.
