The 40D is not obselete by any stretch of the imagination. The 50D does not replace it - it's a new model that's positioned above it at a much higher price. The 40D will remain on sale and remains a superb DSLR for the money. There'll always be new models though and the 40D is now a year old. If it bothers you to not have the very latest, I'd suggest visiting the cameralabs forums where rumours of new models are often discussed. You'll also find out when the trade shows are coming up...

There's no way to keep up with the never-ending dual between Canon and Nikon. As soon as you buy "the latest", it becomes obslolete. I found that out when I researched the hell out of the 40d before buying it, only to find out a few months later it was made obsolete. Canon's motivation seems to be making money...not loyal customers.

This camera takes Compact Flash cards, and the bigger it is, the more pictures you can take. So I would buy the biggest you can find/afford. Check the Canon website first though to see if there's a limit on the size.

You also might wanna look into the Sigma 18-50mm f/2.8 EX or the Tamron 17-50mm f/2.8. Those are both great upgrade lenses and are much cheaper than a brand name.

I sort of wish i didn't first buy a telephoto lens as my only glass, since i have no standard zoom/wide angle for other uses. Honestly, really the best lens is a 50mm. 1.8II from canon, or Sigma's HSM 50mm, although with a 77mm thread count, Filter's are insanely expensive. But 50mm's are some of the best versatile lenses.

Actually, the 17-85 mm USM AF IS lens is great! As well as the 17-55 mm USM Is lens. Even though they have their downsides, like all lenses do, they are far better than the kit lenses, hands down.

the 18-55 kit lens is crap, don't waste your time and money with it. You'll have nicer photographs with a higher end lens. 17-85 will do well. I wouldn't get their 18-200mm lens, it isn't that nice in terms of sharpness. Canon's 'L' lenses would be something to consider in the future. 24-105mm.

no doubt u will go into 450D as 1000D are for newbie photographer and the function provided are not as detailed as 450D from the function menu u can change the 450D default to custom which will give u details to adjust the more specific details u need or those that suits ur shooting style comparing it with the eos 5D marks 3 it offers a close menu comparison .... so if ur new and wanted to have photography skill for ur hobby u should get 450D for now it may cost more but its worth it

Im most likely getting this camera really soon. I was looking at this one, and the nikon D60 I have never used a DSLR before, just my little Casio Exilim I dont have a lot of money to spend no more than 700-800 bucks. I would be using it to take shots of my friends at the skatepark. and then for when i go up in the mountains, Wildlife pics, Scenery, flowers, etc. Im still really unsure of what to get. I could recommend some lenses, but you should be more specific for what purpose you need it. If you want to replace the kit lens, have an unlimited budget, like to use polarizer filters and think about to upgrade to a full frame body in the future, you should consider the 17-44mm f/4L USM, even it would not have a IS (wich you dont really need). If it has to be IS and full frame is not an option, consider EF-S 17-85mm f4-5.6 IS USM or the very bright EF-S 17-55mm f/2.8 IS USM

all i can say about my 450D is it needs a better lens other than that its ok for a cheap camera,not many people can afford hasselblad,or even the cheaper cameras from the likes of nikon,canon or pentax ,take canons 1d and a reasonable lens this costs the best part of 12 grand in the UK,just enjoy taking photographs the kit is just a means to an end.

Today I bought a 40D w/grip, 10-22mm, 24-702.8 L,70-2002.8 L IS !! WOOHOO! However, I MAY go back tomorrow and get this 450D as well. I really should take 2 cameras to a shoot I am doing at the end of the month and this camera seems to be just about as AWESOME as the 40D !! I have been using the 5d with 24-105 f4L for 18 months. It's a great camera. Now the 5d Mk 11 is available I am tempted to upgrade to that. But I doubt 22mpx will be of any benefit in a hand-held situation - which is virtually 100% of my shooting these days, so I can't see an extra £1600 with trade in value being worth the trouble, or the cost. Come on Canon, make it worth my while by bringing the price down.

After all the speculation, Canon announced the EOS 5D Mk II on 17 September 2008. It looks like a killer, but still no built-in flash. The body RRP is $2,600 in the US (£2,299 in the UK), and the kit with the EF 24-105mm f/4 L IS USM lens is $3,499 in the US and (£3,049 in the UK). Why is everything so expensive here in the UK? ef2nyd is correct, the Nikon D3 and Canon EOS 5D Mark II are not two to compare. The D3 would be on the same platform as the Canon EOS 1D series. It's not about which camera wins or not. Both companies are very well respectable and highly trustable. Differences should not be settled over their brand name.

NikonPro3, Canon hasn't had a DSLR with 3 auto-focusing points since the D60, which was introduced back in 2002. Since then, they have upgraded to 7 AF points, 9 AF points, and 45 AF points. Even their entry level DSLRs are equipped with 9 point AF systems. Nikon's latest entry level, the D60, still remains with 3 AF points. Since the introduction of the 10D in 2003, Canon has used AF systems with 7 points and 9 points. AF points is nothing to brag about, anything over 11 points I'd deem useless

Do you really worry about af points being a "pro"? For my purposes, IQ and center AF speed come first, everything else is just a bonus. My 1D has 45 points, but I limit it to 11 since I don't need to use that any more. Anyway, the 5D MkII is appealing for its noise control (supposedly improved from the legendary mark I), MP count, HD video, and if you're already invested in the Canon system, the lenses. I find the D700 and 5D MkII equally enticing, the 5D more so with the video mode.

This camera isn't that great the battery sucks and the menu is hard, takes long to the set the settings you want. Nikon is way more advanced then canon and Nikon is more confertble to use in so many ways i.e D3 has 2 slots for memory cards, 11fps, 51af points and so on. Any Canon camera I checked out it had 3, 6, or 9 af points which sucks cause you cant focus on a smaller area. P.S Sony cameras are shit their no where near Canon or Nikon or even pentax they should not be in the business!

There's something called a zigview which can clip to the viewfinder and basically films it for an LCD scren. It's not suitable for the astro work shown here though. But first, are you sure you've adjusted the viewfinder diopter dial for your eyes? Check your manual for details, and if you have any other Qs, feel free to post on the cameralabs forums!

That's impossible to say as it would be pure speculation! If Canon keeps to an 18 month cycle, then the 450D's replacement wouldn't be due until around this time next year, so it would be a while away yet, and who knows what features it would have. There'll always be a new model, so unless you know or suspect there's one coming in the next couple of months, I'd say simply buy when you actually want or need a new camera.

Hi there Gordon, i've currently got a TZ5 and im looking to upgrade to a 450D. Would you suggest i upgrade now or wait next year for the 500D or whatever its replacement will be called?? The 18-55mm is fine for getting started, but obviously the 18-200mm will give you a range that's almost four times bigger in a single lens. Depends what you want and how much you have to spend. Feel free to discuss this further in the Canon section of the cameralabs forums!

Hi, glad you found the custom function - I did actually mention it on the design page of my review at cameralabs . com - the videos here are just brief overviews! I agree though, it's odd that Canon doesn't enable the AF in live view, or even Live View itself out of the box...

Ahaha, A Reply! I did some research and it turns out you have to go into the Menu and into the custom settings and manually put it into the "Live View-Quick Mode AF" mode. If you don't (which it won't be when it's brand new, since you have to turn it on manually) you will not be able to AF in live view! I wish you said that in the video, ugh. Sat here for the last 20 minutes frantically searching for a reason why mine didn't focus! I though it was broken, lol.

Get the 17-85 kit if you can it has more zoom and is better in low light situations,] Its MUCH better than the 18-55. Get a reversing ring for macro shots ,close ups. The other lens I'd recommend is the new 70-300mm with "IS" Image stabilzation NOT the old 75-300 but these lenses are expensive. The old EF 75-300 is good for extra zoom at mid range though and relatively cheap but has to be held totally still.

I own a 400D and I thought it was a pretty good review...Even though I knew the features, it was a good watch and the guy knows what he's talking about. Furthermore, "either D40, its expected successor, 400D ..." Please explain to me why a NIKON D40 is the successor to a CANON 400D? Normally I would put this down to a simple typo, but seeing as you "have experience with 350D, 5D and some higher-end Canon 35mm EOS..." I assume you know something I don't. does any one have an idea if and eos (2.olt petrol turbo) would be quicker than the new 325i convertible. My dads got the EOS optioned up with 18s and McPherson struts and my mate jst got a new 325...i wanna run him lol

I like that color combo. Might get one but will definitely get the extended warranty as I owned 2 new Beetles and lots of problems with them. Nothing else out there as a hardtop conv other then Pontiac and I heard pretty bad stuff about it and it's the same price so no brainier decision. Wish Mazda or Toyota made one like this. Hate soft top's.

Motorweek does great reviews. If I had to choose, I'd take the new GTI. Too bad I have to choose. I'd love to have both the GTI and Eos in my stable. Both are great vehicles. My main objection to the Eos as an only car is the smallish trunk.

Yes!! I couldn't agree more. The 40d takes way better pictures than the 50d. I found examples online, and the 40d IQ blows away the new technology. I'm sorry, but the extended CMOS sensors do not make it better. The only reason I would buy one is for the LCD 900,000 resolution. That's the main thing I would want.

I found out the 40D takes better pictures than the 50D even though it has 5 more megapixles. Save your money and get the 40D. That 18-200mm lens isn't that nice compared to the Nikon's 18-200 lens. Canon's lenses are awesome but their 18-200mm isn't quite as sharp.
