It really shouldn't cause carpal tunnel if you play with proper technique, and even if it was the case that someone with perfect technique can play their whole life and get CT, anchoring still advances it. And I get what you mean, but all I'm saying is nobody should find NOT anchoring uncomfortable after doing it for a while. And just for verification, I'm not attacking Steve Morse's technique, just stating a fact.

guitar playing in general gives people carpal tunnel syndrome. also really it just comes down to what works for someone. paul gilbert is just used to playing without anchoring because he's comfortable with the way he plays.

I never took lessons. I was a fast picker, and did not know it but I use anchoring. It just came naturally. It makes you more accurate too.

I've read everything ever written by and about Morse, and while he mentions carpal tunnel/tendon problems in his fretting hand, I've never heard him speak of it regarding his picking hand. Also, I find it impossible to believe he would ever change his anchoring technique - his use of it is essential to his masterful abilities. His unique sound is a result of it as well, especially in controlling (damping) unused strings at high volumes. Could you provide a link where he makes this statement?

Yeah, he anchors, but also has carpal tunnel in both wrists because of it, and has mentioned that if he could go back and learn guitar again he wouldn't anchor. Paul Gilbert doesn't anchor, and look at him! Morse is still a god among men though :)

beeroosterm....Very good points about one of, if not my favorite guitarists of all time. I also concur with Steve that, speed should be sacrificed for accuracy. I've seen LOT'S of speed demons out there who's accuracy sucks. I know, I used to be one of them way back in the day. I'd rather be accurate than fast. Speed comes in time. I am also left handed and it just made more sense to me to use my dominant hand on the fretboard. I forced myself to learn that way.

It's just funny what "snacksforaddicts" said...

Steve has explained his picking technique many times before in articles/videos. His "anchoring" technique (along with three-fingered grip on pick) allows him great maneuverability albeit at the expense of ultimate speed. He's willing to make the "sacrifice" in order to play precisely. He does pick in the normal manner at times, however. He is indeed left-handed and deliberately set out to play using his dominant hand on the fretboard. Astonishing decision to make, especially as a teenager, eh?

even if u think ahead, u wont be able to do it in a split sec with morse's grip... lol, no man, morse is god, its composition that makes music and not tech...

Timothy Scandella. Strange comment! What do you mean?
By: 06mets. on 05 Nov 08, 02:09:36
OK, I've read your post and most of the others under this Steve Morse guitar exercise. From one Piazza fan to another, WTF??
By: snacksforaddicts. on 03 Nov 08, 16:55:07
its called thinking ahead. even 8 finger tappers have to take a split second to stash their pick. you make it seem like morse scratches his head and goes "damn my guitar playing is so limited."

This is why you gotta' love Mike Piazza. Great mid line-up hitter, awesome catcher, and future Hall Of Famer!!

My pinky and ring finger rest on the guitar too. It depends on how much pressure you put on the anchored fingers. My fingers glide over the guitar body with barely any friction so it doesn't slow me down.

my pinky finger and ring finger rest on the guitar and i can play stuff like that fine.

For all u guys arguing about anchoring..... Here, steve's composition playing is GODLY..... but its true that u CANT reach ur full potential by anchoring.....U may be able to smoke the shredding parts but its almost impossible to do those eetremely fast and complicated licks combining sweeping and tapping or quickly using 8 finger tapping or cross hand in between ur playing if u anchor ur pick grip.... Check out guys like Daniel Gottardo or Gustavo Guerra to see what I mean...

When you mean you anchor it between strings, is it like a light palm mute, on the bridge?
By: johnland82. on 18 Oct 08, 17:42:07
I see a lot of arguing about anchoring your picking hand going on here. I anchor my picking hand now and have never played better. Though, you only anchor with your small pinky knuckle when playing the E, A, D strings. However, when I anchor I don't place my pinky on the guitar body, I anchor it between strings (depending on which string I'm picking). It keeps my hand in a relaxed fist and allows for much more speed/control. Of course there is more to it than that, but I'm lazy :P
