He's talking about 'Oh Calcutta!'.

You're stating a personal opinion, I'm stating what I observe every night as a stand-up comedian. Things change. Old acts are replaced with new acts. What was once slang is now common vocabulary. A topic that was once taboo in the 40's, like sex is now WAY out in the open. There's nothing wrong with that. It's called evolution. Whether it's funny or not is just an opinion. Whether it's popular or not is a flat out statistic. By the way, his name is Bill COSBY.

I've seen him with Crosby he is as funny as he always was, same time as this. And he has a very valid point I feel.

I hate it when comedians take comedy too seriously. This is just another example of a comedic legend turning into an irrelevant, grumpy old man. The same thing happened to Cosby. The sense of humor these comedians once possessed turns into bitter closed mind as they watch comedy evolve without them. The only way comedy would stay the same is if society didn't change. As sex becomes more and more acceptable in society, so will it in the arts, including comedy.

Nice dream..Mr.Marx..But? Dirty, hateful comedy is here to stay.

Come on...lighten up. You can't be serious about my hat comment. He, himself, was joking about it. I have great respect for Groucho and his brothers.
By: shibman1103. on 20 Nov 08, 03:49:19
I don't think he resents them because they are dirty or not funny. I think he resents, as most old school comedians do, because they are easy. Like he said "to tell a clean joke and get laughs, that takes a comedian". They think it cheapens the art of comedy when the word fuck is every punchline. That's just my take because I've heard other comedians talk about the subject in that light and I do agree with them. It cheapens it, not because it's dirty, but because it's easy.

Yep, and here you are, spending your time, watching Youtube while someone who can afford a 3.2 million dollar hat is usually summering in Monte Carlo. Bless your heart.
By: alun101. on 19 Nov 08, 20:18:29
he's right - a cheap laugh is easier by being rude
By: guitarsquiddy. on 18 Nov 08, 10:05:30
I actually disagree. It's pure hypocrisy he advocates. I do agree that 90% of sexual jokes are not funny (American pie is dreadful), but there are good ones. And sorry, but if you tell different jokes in mixed company, than you would tell only to men or only to women, you overslept for about one century. Anything(...), but mindless good taste.
By: Pahis1. on 17 Nov 08, 19:30:38
yes you can compare but I think it's ridiculous. What's funny now is very different than what was funny then.

What would Groucho Marx say about rap videos and mainstream porno lol
By: ultrakool. on 16 Nov 08, 05:49:50
A termite walks into a bar and says, "Is the bar tender here?" Why did Bill Clinton name his dog Buddy? Because he didn't want to say, "Come, Spot". You be the judge.

Groucho saw a doidy boid, sitting on a doidy coib at toidy toid and toid. That's the most ridiculous thing I ever hoid.

In 1992, the tam-o-shanther Groucho is wearing in this clip sold at a Sothby's auction for $3.2 million! Most ever paid for a stupid looking cap. I know this for a fact, because I was the one who bought it.
By: ntripp. on 15 Nov 08, 06:36:52
This is stupid.

Carlin and Pryor are humorous when doing observational humor. However, I'm intellectually offended by their filth.
By: billbot1982. on 14 Nov 08, 09:41:45
Groucho Marx was a very smart man, I agree with what he says here.
By: chisoxfan5. on 13 Nov 08, 20:32:31
I think his point about needing to be clean to be a comedian is a bit harsh, I mean, come on who doesn't think Pryor and Carlin are funny? Overall, I think he's right, that the funniest comedians tend to be clean(er, at least), and he is one of comedies giants.

WOW i always watched this guy when i was young...but seeing him this old is so weird coz he looks very very similar to my father...
By: MuppetPro. on 11 Nov 08, 20:55:10
Disagree with me but I was shocked to see this as a Groucho fan. Here's Groucho talking as if he was like every conformist in Society. This hat looks silly on an adult. And You should never be risky in your humor. This is my theory. It doesn't matter about the content. It's THE POINT YOUR MAKING! Dirtiness for the sake of shock is NOT Funny, If you are proveing a point that's other. Men have their fan and girls have.....To hell with Gender Norms. Tomboys can joke like men too. Properganda SUCKS!
By: Taz8130. on 11 Nov 08, 20:15:44
What Groucho said is still elevant today. Unfortunately, over the years the number of true comic entertainers has sadly diminished, making way for talentless 5 minute wonders who's stock in trade is to present their observations on sex, bodily functions and the misdemeanors of other talentless, publicity-seeking celebrities whilst incuding as many swear-words as they can get away with. It's all down to cah & ratings nowadays - talent comes a poor third in the equation.
