The thing I love about Janis is how she was able to trancend the gender barrier with performing and singing. Guys could get as much from her as women could and relate to the emotion she put forth. There are times when I've gotta put on Janis because a male singer just dosen't touch that extra push of emotional expression I need at that moment! Even as a guy, you can totally feel what Janis was trying to get through to you.

The only live performance of Bobby McGee that I knew of was the one at Threadgills in 1970, before she recorded it. She did sometimes sing songs live prior to their recordings so it is possible. I have a couple books and one video about Janis that claims that is what she recorded the night of her death. I don't know, there's conflicting information out there so without actually being there it's hard to say. In any case, it's a great song and she is missed! Peace.

He said it was a very emotional moment and surreal. He said, he didn't write the song for Janis, but he may as well have because it belongs to her now. If you are interested, look up her Little Girl Blue performance on the Tom Jones Show. She blows all theories away that say she can't sing. Let me correct myself. I know Janis' story. As I previously stated, Janis' parents worried about her a lot, and loved her very much. Janis didn't say many nice things about her family while she was out in the public eye, either. You weren't there either. I am going by the numerous letters Janis wrote home to her family, plus the book written by her sister. Laura Joplin, Janis' sister, even went with Janis to her high school reunion. So yeah, her family did love her.

Listen guys, we all love Janis, but if you really want to have a good old cry, listen to her 'When Angels Cry' especially if you lost someone close to you.. I just saw Janis in Chatham, NJ on Saturday Nov.15 and she was great. She is what you call a true talent and such a beautiful person both inside and out. Her book is fantastic and I think that may be the Martin D18 she is playing here that was stolen. I was very sad when I read that in her book. She is such a great songwriter and performer. :)

It's a shame that some people can't realize how truly amazing that performance was. Joss was really good, and Melissa was just amazing. What a great rock voice. She has a cooler voice than most guys in today's rock bands. Even right after chemotherapy, Melissa can kick the hell out of a song. Janis would have been proud. A great performance shouldn't be perfect, it should be emotive...it should move you. Just as it did to the audience that night, who were all on their feet.

I still keep coming back to this one. It's like an old friend... Melissa doin' Janis, how appropriate for a tribute. They thought that she might be to weak to stick it out the whole song and had her on stage with Joss (1 do enjoy her too). But, Melissa said it was cathartic to let it all out and I believe that she wouldn't have done it better if she would have been well 100%. Everytime I see this MLE performance, it's like food for my soul!

Since finding this clip I keep coming back for more. The song was originally recorded by Erma Franklin who performed a fantastic soul classic. Then Janis lovingly covered it and made the song hers. But Melissa now owns this song. This performance is just outstanding and so good on so many levels that it just blows me away each time I see it. Joss made a decent tribute cover, and Melissa took the whole event to a different level. It is a divine rock performance and fab clip.

I believe that Janis would have died regardless of the band she was with. BBHC, was raw, had an edge, no polish, like Janis in the beginning. Sam Andrew and James Gurley were raging heroin addicts as well as Janis. It was Peggy Casserta who turned Janis on to heroin again after a year of her being clean. Janis died because of her addiction, not because of a change in band, in my opinion. Either way, she is sorely missed. At least BBHC still tours and plays. Peace.

Dude! I have been having similar thoughts for almost as long. Big Brother and the Holding Company was a far superior band than full tilt boogie. Way way superior. Big Brother had more style, more soul, and way more edge. I easily put the solo in this song in the top ten guitar solos of the sixties, hell, Ill put it up in the top ten of all time.
