Does anybody else who bought the album feel slightly conned because the 2 main singles' choruses sound so different than when they play on the radio or in the music videos? I think it would totally be fine to perform the chord slowly (sort of like with a little fermata over it) within the context of ANY Liszt piece, but it has to fit musically in the piece. I would suggest you record yourself playing and see if it fits with your overall interpretation. If it doesn't sound convincing, then by all means don't slow down as dramatically as EK does, but perhaps do a more subtle version. I'm sure you will make the right choice - follow your gut feeling!

yeah but, the thing is...how Liszt would like it to be played? imagine... you have to play that chord... not in this piece...but... in other one or you have to play just the chord... how is correct to play it? considering that it is a rolled chord and the time of the notes, whole note. ya get me? i mean...it should be a diference if I play a rolled chord with halves notes...or with octave notes..etc...

I think it's all a matter of your preference. Of course, it could have been a spontaneous interpretation - so don't read too much into it. lena, I think he actually has something wrong with his nails. Although I'm not certain about this. I remember trying to copy him when I was a child by covering my own nails with plasters. I couldn't control the keys though and I left little bits of grey sticky stuff all over the piano...

I understand what you mean when you say that it goes on too long.When I used to hear some of the late Schubert Sonatas, they seemed incredibly long-winded, but once one gets past the scope of the piece and really listens and has a chance to explore every note, crevice and cranny of these remarkable works,one begins to appreciate the immense beauty and sheer breadth of the emotional and musical statement. Schubert merely uses the sonata form as a vehicle to wrap this grand statement of expression

Notions such as 'classical' and 'romantic' are not clear-cut, well-defined, mutually-exclusive categories given to us by God. I agree that it's usually a good reason to reject something if it's 'generally accepted'. I only wrote that because it was in reply to someone else who seemed to think I was expressing something ridiculous. I do love Schubert - but generally (in my opinion) it goes on for too long. And the reason is because Schubert was trying to use a classical form to express romantic ideas.

Everything Brendel plays is well-done and suave, however, I feel that his Schubert is a little too "classical" for my taste. When Schubert uses repeated notes in his melodies, one HAS to delineate them carefully so that they don't all same the same. Each one has to have it's own individual sounds and character according to the melodic content.

Yes, I have indeed played it over and over again. I do love this sonata and I do love Schubert's music in general. But there's always the problem of an imbalance between form and content with Schubert. He used Classical forms but the long lyrical Romantic tunes weren't appropriate for sonata form, for example. Sonata form is best suited for motivic themes. Nevertheless, I do love this piece. Please don't be offended. This opinion isn't just mine - it's generally accepted.
