Congrats on that great run! This was indeed one of the toughest games I've played on the nes (hell, probably ever). Unlike Super Mario Brothers you can't control your jumps in mid air, and there wasn't a dozen magic mushrooms in a level to get you armored again once you lost it. You had to be constantly alert and your reflexes top notch.

Good stuff. I can never get the shield when I want it and always end up going back to beginning of that nightmarish level with all those bloody bats! Contra, easily one of the most popular NES games. I haven't played it in a long time until just a few days ago, when me and a friend started playing. I decided to do a speed run and here it is :D. Slipped a couple times in stage 3 and in stage 7 Should have skipped the B as it took too long and I really didn't need it. Oh well, enjoy.

If he was save stating... it wouldn't jump like that. The people that make those stupid, and I agree pointless save state videos do it seemlessly. This guy was using turbo, which isn't exactly cheating... but it does make this game a hell of a lot easier. If you can just kill every boss as you walk up to it, instead of having to jump around and stay alive long enough to kill them, the game isn't nearly as hard. He killed one boss before the difficult part even appeared. Cool vid though.

It's a TAS (see the video description for a link to more info) by Phil Côté. An emulator records the button presses, and with savestates you can reload anytime. Other tools are e.g. disassemblers (for reading the game's program code). TASes are difficult to create, and can easily take months. The goal is finding the shortest button sequence that completes the game, while being fun to watch. It's a bit different from "normal gameplay" speedruns. Btw. is that your real pic on your profile? :)

Kudos my friend! How did you manage to get through all the levels without even dying? I noticed you came awfully close a couple of times. Used to play this game alot plus, my cousin gave me hints and secrets. On the other hand I beat this game more than once and I died more than once in this crazy game! bcshepe: btw, you could also get an emulator and the rom, but if you just want to play the original zelda, i'd recommend zelda classic since it's faithful to the original right down to the music and graphics and you can also download add'l quests. depends on how much of an old-school zelda fan you are. me = VERY big zelda fan. :)
