The people who did that were all free marketeers. Darpanet was headed by an MIT guy, funded by the DOD. It wasn't developed by the DOD. Nothing is. Government can't even build roads, it contracts everything out. The only case you could make is that it provides compulsive (Taxes, don't pay you go to prison) coordination. No it didn't. The internet was originally developed as a military system, not as a profit seeking endeavor. Electricity was discovered through human curiosity, not desire for profit. Computers were developed by the military, and in universities receiving government funding. But you're right, youtube was created to turn a profit. So you can cling to your religious faith in the "free" market. Hurray for the freedom to exploit and oppress.
