I'm sure you're far better than me, but according to the BCA if you sink the 8-ball on the break it is spotted, it is not a win. For a legal break, 4 object balls need to hit the rail...it doesn't matter if you hit the rack from the front or back. Not trying to sound like a no-it-all. Out of curiosity, where did you get your rules from?

Good question, it depends on what rules you play by. In the APA any time you make the 8-ball on the break without scratching it's a win. If you also scratch, it's a loss. This is true regardless of what other balls may be made on the break shot. In BCA play if the 8-ball is made on the break it's simply spotted and the game continues. Hey and thanks for the comment - I have a few cues for shooting and one for breaking, for less than $50 I get a solid break shot with a three-piece Jump/Break Pool Cue, I can break it down for a jump shot and also works great as a short cue in tight spaces too. My cue has a 14mm one-piece phenolic tip and ferrule. It measures a standard 58" long and is 21 oz weight. Three-piece cue measurements: Shaft 28-3/4" Middle 15-1/8" Bottom 16-1/2". thanks for the comment, hope this helps Dean

If the 8 ball is pocketed on the break it is not always a win. There are two different ways to play. There are two options. You can play sinking the 8 wins or, the better way, If you pocket the 8 ball on the break the person who broke can either choose a rerack or spot the 8 ball. Because sinking the 8 on a break is mostly luck.

Rememer when you put spin on your cue ball and hit another ball, you also create spin on the ball your hitting. If you put bottom left spin on your cue ball, the ball your hitting will sping to the right, play around with this shot, in the pool world we call this "Spin Transfer". Good Luck! Dean

Yes, they are there as reference points on the table. When practicing always us a point of reference, starting point and where the balls stop or pocket. Cue ball control is key when positioning for your next shot, make this a priority when playing billiard pool, make the shot first, then position the cue ball, think 3 balls ahead when playing for position. Many players mistakenly call these spins english. Both expressions may be combined to explain the point of the cue ball aimed at for a shot. A player asked What sort of english did you use? might respond, High left english or A bit of bottom right english, etc. to explain that both top or bottom spin and sidespin was applied. Call it what you want, but many players still call this english.

That shot isn't the best example of draw vs follow. 1. If you get to the point where you're actually learning draw and follow, either shot would've been easy, neither would be a "better" shot. 2. IF you were straight in, it would have been a "better" choice to draw it back. I'd rather take a cut than a scratch. 3. Rolling the ball with a center ball hit would've given you great position as well. 4. There's no such thing as top "English". English refers to the x-axis of the cue ball.

@getlois: for the drawback, you get a cleaner screwback if you have cue as low down as possible, with it under your chin and follow through. Snooker players do it all the time, they have a very different style to the American pool players

It depends on who you ask...read on Bottom English (or screw shots as referred to by the Brits) The same applies to every type of English you apply but trying to put the right amount of English on the ball to get the cue ball into the correct posistion is a matter of experience and adapting to different tables. Yes you should keep the cue level unless you have to elevate the cue for a masse shot, jump shot or to avoid a push shot etc... In this shot I was simply demonstrating where to hit the cue ball when executing a "Draw Shot" which you can shoot any way you like as long as you achieve the same result. Obviously you're a pretty good player. But I don't agree with elevating the cue unless absolutly nessesary. i have one of the best draw shot techniques around where I'm from. Sometimes it is nessesary to elevate. But don't you think a level cue is better for accuracy?

why on earth do you elevate the cue when hitting a draw shot? I thought you're supposed to keep the cue as level as possible. maybe not completely level but you elevated way too much.

You would be correct if I didn't move the cue ball 2" also. The agle stays the same because you moved both the cue ball and the object ball 2" to the right - Use the diamonds as a guide based on measurement, of course if your stroke is off you will miss, and don't hit to hard, the rail will not have time to react and create the angle you desire - Lots of factors in bank shots, practice and decide what works best for you - Dean

hmmm....seems to me if the q and object ball were both 2" to the right of the diamond, you'd have to strike the object ball on the right(instead of dead center). Otherwise the ball would end up 2" to the right of desired pocket.

This shot is fun, but takes a little practice. First hit your cue ball into the rail not to hard and see if you can get it to jump back over a ball, then work on your accuracy. You would still need to cheat the pocket unless you already have an angle, there are other ways but this is easier and you don't have to use any English. Don't make this game hard, when you have a shot keep it simple, don't get crazy because you can. First of all you are not an "Idiot" Don't be so hard on yourself, even older pool players ask me this question. First practice your stroke, then take just the cue ball and place it on the table. Over stroking is common with most players, even myself but if executed with perfect stroke this shot is a "Game Winner" - I just placed 2nd out of 16 players at Stix Billiards and I've never had to "Masse" as many times as needed that day, but I was playing some tough players and found myselp "Burried" most of the time... a great shot to know when in this situation... I've been playing pool competitively for around 10+ years now. I just like to say that you have to remember when giving out tips that beginners are watching more closely to things that we(experienced players) don't pay attention to as much anymore ... such as ... cue elevation, stance, bridge, etc. For Example: I see in some videos you bridge higher than others when not needed or in this video you should stay between to pockets as much as you can to avoid scratching and keep it simple.

The weight of the cue shoudn't matter, it's how you stroke down on the cue ball. Remember you are creating spin on the cue ball in order to change its direction, if you put enough back spin on the cue ball hitting it 6 inches forward, it will come straight back to the point of contact, now if you move the tip slightly left or right it will curve, play around with this and observe the results. Cue elevation is key when doing this shot, be careful not to damage the felt. Good luck. Dean

But what happens on a swerve is that you sort of 'push the ball into the cloth' sideways(it's relatively slow). The cueball wants to go to the side with least friction and wants to go to the objectball. A massé shot grabs the cloth with spin, whereas a swerve slides and creates a sort of 'no-pressure zone' on the cloth, like one part of the table is lower.

Thanks for your comments - I am familiar with a Swerve Shot based on your description, in my video there is not enough distance to execute a "Swerve Shot" so I had to Masse - and yes I did have to grab the cloth to get around my object ball at a short distance - Thanks again for your comments Dean

Swerveshot is the term that is used for this kind of shot in snooker. The difference between a swerve-shot and a massé is that swerveshot doesn't actually change it's direction because the ball grabs the cloth. It changes direction because the spin(which is diagonal relative to the table) creates less friction on one side of the ball at the moment your cue hits the ball. If this was a massé, the ball would keep curving in the same angle until it hit something.

A what? A complete reversal of cueball direction would be the most radical example; however, the Massé in this video did not require it. Yes, there is such thing as "Slight Massé" not all Massé shots are radical, I guess you call this a "Swerve" shot, that is a new one for me, I'll have to research this shot and see if it even exists. This is a swerve, not a massé shot. Massé grabs the cloth, swerve makes the ball sort of slip back and makes it return to it's original line(if you strike it properly). For this shot you wouldn't even have to elevate the cue that much.

I like to add a few things that may help. Before making a shot decide what you want to do first ... alot of people miss easy shots because they didn't fully commit the shot and where they wanted the cue ball be for the next shot. Try to think 3 balls ahead ... create angles for 2 shots ahead ... being too straight on sucks unless it's the last ball to shoot. Also ... if distracted ... get up and walk to the opposite side of shot ... it allows time to forget about what distracted you. Then Commit

Yes, this works very well for me, I sometimes neglect this rule when in a hurry, pool is a very patient sport unless your playint "Speed Pool". Good Luck in your game Dean

Thanks a lot for the tips. I'm sort of a beginner pool player, and yes, the shot visualisation tip really helps. Before, i usually followed my instincts for predicting where will the white ball end up at, but with visualising it's much more efficient! Thanks.
