Now CO2 makes up how much of the atmosphere??? like less then 1%... o yeah that's right. Hey global cooling in the 60's or 70's didn't happen, noooooooooo. THIS GUY IS A BIG ASS FUCKIN LIAR MISLEADING SO MANY PEOPLE HE SHOULD BE FUCKIN SHOT OR PUT IN JAIL. Al gore says CO2 determines temperature. Wrong... in his own fucking graph it shows a 200 year lag between temperature and CO2. The CO2 fallows the Temperature. TEMP DETERMINES THE AMOUNT OF CO2. The greenies are fuckin idiots

siim, like you and I are gonna see the results? I doubt it but would like to live a 1000 years. The time factor only stresses the need. Synthetic trees are cool. I bet we could manufacture enough CO2 scrubbers to throw us into a deep ice age. But nature is always going to do its thing. We are in a geological warm trend. People don't admit that but we are. The other side is a few thousand years of cold. Cold isn't good for populations. Talk to China about clean air and good luck there.
By: siim258. on 20 Oct 08, 11:06:45
So waiting 300 years to see the results makes the project kinda ... well low priority. This is not to say nothing is done to remove the CO2. Just google "Synthetic trees". Though that particular research is only on paper. Still if the US keeps the air clean and the EU keeps the trees pumping, then I have no doubt's that we CAN solve it.
By: siim258. on 20 Oct 08, 10:57:22
I agree that doing both at the same time is the best option. However the project of restoring the rainforest would be very-very long term endeavor. First, the planting itself would take longer than 10 years because you aren't doing it your own back yard. Second, the trees take up to 100 years to become of age. Third, it would take another 100 years to cycle through all the junk we've created. Fourth, the effects of CO2 in our atmosphere can be seen with a 100 years delay.
By: mallardhead. on 19 Oct 08, 22:26:06
siim, its a neat analogy, but your boat has lots of holes from lots of places and some are far larger than the rest. The answer is get that boat out of the water. I agree the best answer is to stop the CO2 but between China & the US that's not going to happen fast. So doing both at the same time is probably the most efficient way. And plants are still the best processors of surface CO2. So lots of plants now, in the right places, and stop producing excess CO2 now or soonest possible chance..
By: siim258. on 19 Oct 08, 21:50:05
This is my philosophy: if I have a leak on my boat, I plug the hole before starting to scoop out the water. That just makes more sense to me. As for Al Gore, although he wants to take giant leaps, you can't save the whole world at once. You need to take steps. He is taking one of those steps. I'm glad for that. Now to the rainforest issue ... while the USA does little to recover the rainforests, other countries are doing their part. Mainly UK I believe.
By: mallardhead. on 19 Oct 08, 18:09:59
siim, you are exactly backwards. Until we correct the plant deficit we will still have excess CO2. It will take a long time to correct the plant deficit at the equator, as rainforests are difficult to reclaim. It needs to happen immediately and may take 100 to 150 years to begin to restore that climate. As we do the one, replanting like crazy, we can complete the other, minimizing human CO2 production.
By: siim258. on 19 Oct 08, 17:50:24
Most of the CO2 is recycled by marine life. Besides, it is far more important to stop producing CO2 before starting to recycle it. Because it would be kind of stupid to do it the other way around. I'm not saying trees aren't important or anything, but one needs to have perspective.

By: mallardhead. on 10 Oct 08, 20:57:40
Al Gores problem is that he persistently ignore the deforestation issue. CO2 is processed by plants. The rainforests are being slashed and burned. That leaves more surface CO2 unprocessed. You can build as many windmills as you want BUT if you don't restore the rainforests, if you let them continue to be cut, then no green tech will save us. NO ONE is promoting this fact.

Solar Power Towers can provide unlimited clean 24/7 dispatchable electricity. Period! Old man on the red side wants to spend 250 billion on 50 nuke plants. That's more per watt than what SPT's would cost. And the blue side is not seriously addressing this miraculous energy potential. No need for hydrogen, electricity is better when a law is created to outlaw spending 2 billion a day to OPEC nations. Another law must dedicate the creation of cheap rechargeable batteries! GO AL GORE!

"An American living in a defensive crouch cannot fully tap the vast rivers of idealism, innovation, volunteerism, and philanthropy that still flow through our nation. And it cannot play the vital role it has long played for the rest of the world--as a beacon of hope and the country that we can always be counted on to lead the world in response to whatever is the most important challenge of the day." - Thomas Friedman

No he does not own a private jet. That is a blatant lie, actually And besides, even if he did, Gore deserves it for all the work he is doing on behalf of everyone and he needs to get around to a lot of places Secondly, personal attacks, especially flat out lies, do not change the fact that we are dealing with a very serious crisis right now, the crisis of climate change

The following organizations agree that the evidence for anthropogenic global warming is overwhelming: National Academy of Sciences National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration NASA Goddard Institute for Space Studies Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists British Royal Society British Meteorological Office And there are many more. The claim that a few wing-nut skeptics know more than these prestigious organizations is only part of an ideological belief system, not science.

... whether the IPCC assessment is a fair summary of professional scientific thinking, and answers YES ... The American Meteorological Society, the American Geophysical Union, and the American Association for the Advancement of Science all have issued statements in recent years concluding that the evidence for human modification of climate is compelling." -- Naomi Oreskes And that was written in 2004, before the IPCC Fourth Assessment Report made the case even stronger in 2007.

sciencemag. org/cgi/content/full/306/5702/1686 "IPCC is not alone in its conclusions. In recent years, all major scientific bodies in the United States whose members' expertise bears directly on the matter have issued similar statements. For example, the National Academy of Sciences report begins: 'Greenhouse gases are accumulating in Earth's atmosphere as a result of human activities, causing surface air temperatures and subsurface ocean temperatures to rise.' The report explicitly asks ...

Both cigarette carcinogenesis and anthropogenic global warming are scientific theories that are strongly supported by peer-reviewed models and data. Both are also disputed by well-funded disinformation campaigns. Renowned historian Naomi Oreskes explored the connections between those campaigns, and she eloquently explained the anti-communist origins of greenhouse denialism: youtube. com/watch?v=2T4UF_Rmlio

You know what liberals... Gas is expensive right now. Wow, I love to go to the grocery store and pay horrendous prices. Bush is an oil man. He has joked about how much money they are making right now off of oil. After we transition out of this horrendous oil-based economy, that is crashing down around us right now, clean energy will be cheap and plentiful Whether you like it or not it is already happening, I just hope we haven't reached the tipping point yet.
