Steve Knight went into obscurity after his departure from Mountain. After his 1972 departure from Mountain, Knight returned to his Jazz roots, working in specialty engineering (as a door engineer), and as a songwriter, author and part-time musician. In 1999 he moved to Woodstock NY elected to a seat on the Woodstock Town Board. After 4 straight terms, he quit and has returned to private life including an upcoming music project.

are you serious? wow, Leslie's having a tough tour... but I think its his best tour since the early 70's. I was in NY to see Satch and West play together (double encore). I would have emptied my bank account to see that, so Im glad I did! Leslie needs the R&R Hall of Fame. He's done too much and meant to much to this industry.

i just saw him in phoenix yesterday at a satch concert. One of Corky's drum sticks landed behind Leslie and he tripped on it and messed up his knee a bit. Thought he was having a heart attack up there lol. He was great though.

I love Deep Purple, but to say that any of the band members were the best at their positions in 1973 is a huuuuuuuuuge stretch! Jon Lord doesn't compare to Rick Wright of Pink Floyd, Rick Wakeman of Yes, or John Paul Jones of Led Zeppelin; Ian Paice can't come close to John Bonham, Neil Peart, Keith Moon, to name a few; and Blackmore, while technically superior to nearly everyone, lacks the soul of Page, Clapton, Beck, Gilmour, Townsend; and as for vocals... DP are a working class band.

Sounds like a reference to some place in England down the road from Earls Court, any British folks know what Robert is referencing? Man, I would have loved to see Zep from 73-75. I saw them in LA in June of 77, Jimmy was on his game that night, the whole band sounded great. But, 73-75 they were unstoppable. Hell, 69 or 70 would have smoked, but I was only ten. Hard to talk Mom and Dad into letting me go then. Jimmy and the Les Paul, too cool at 3:11.

I don't think that Jimmy was out of his head so much that he couldn't play the music he (and the band) played that night. RP seemed a bit spaced out if anything. He went off-key occasionally (not on this video), more so on the TUF song. We drove from Durham to this gig at EC, and it was the second-best concert ever seen. The best ever? Frank at Edinburgh...

LOL All of them... a lot of acid, a lot of psychedelics (as we called them then), thc in many forms, etc. Tried coke a few times but with the other stuff i was doing, it wasnt up to much by comparison. I no longer have an eidetic memory like i did but it works well now and i am very grateful and very humbled by the generosity of the Lord in giving me my life back. As you know, Drugs don't enhance, they just destroy.

Wow. I lived there then but had to walk away from the whole scene to reclaim the brain cells I had left. Would have been fun to be there. Shux, it would have been a memory and experience of a lifetime. I used to listen to this every day and feel the words as I got stronger, getting my mind back, learning to talk again, etc. Those were amazing days. I'm lucky to have been able to come back to life. Most didn't get back from that dusty trail we were on...as you know. Thanks Steve!

Indeed they were. And they were also touring relentlessly and winding up on bills with so many different bands. But it was a different time back then as quality live bands were abundant and the economics allowed one to see 3 and 4 bands on one bill for a reasonable price. RT always delivered the goods though James Dewar was a big part of the sound.

Saw Trower, Dewar and Co. back in '75 at the Reading Festival--absolutely magic! Frankie Miller wrote this song, which I'm sure is from the Jude days. Miller would have been KILLER on this track, but Dewar is just as good, and brings out all the broodiness and soul in it. They don't make 'em like this anymore!

Robin Trower played a 73 and maybe a 74 on the recording of the Bridge of Sighs album, one black and one white in color (great symbolism too, although I doubt it was meant that way). He apparently picked them up at Max's in NYC right before the 17 days of recording, of which he had 7 or so to pick from and spend a number of hours trying them all out before making his selection of the two he took to the studio.

I think the four of them were really 'on' here. They just had a lot of different little spots and changes that I haven't heard done this way in other live versions. Plant has some interesting vocals at times including some things I've never heard him do ever again. Wow...the interaction and mutual-listening amongst the four of them and instantaneous responding to these influences to create sonic meanderings was great!

wow! This 4-part Dazed and Confused was one of the best I've seen. It was so full of changes and interesting bits. Just look at how much contrasting quietness and breathing space was in parts. This has in common (at least in a certain way) with a lot of so-called classical orchestral works (such as Russian composers with the quiet and bombastic contrasts). I find many listeners today don't have the patience to appreciate the quiet parts that accentuate the powerful parts. This was great!

The first concert I ever saw was Johnny Winters at the Boston Tea Party. I must of been about 17. He played so great. Totally cemented the blues in me. Terrific slide. They played Jeff Beck music before and after the show like a tribute, I think that Jeff had just had a terrible car accident or something. The following year I went to see Muddy in a little club on Boylston St. Fred McDowell the same year. Long Live The Blues. This is an amazing recording. Thank you so much for posting it.

After doing a great deal of research about Johnny Winter's early days, I learned that this performance is actually during the early morning hours of August 9, 1970. Johnny appeared onstage with Luther Allison at the Ann Arbor Blues Fest the afternoon before. Pictures of that set exist and are out there on the web. Yee has a great site devoted to JW and you will definitely find one there in the 1970 timeline, though his dates are sometimes off a bit, too. Johnny was the best then.

That's Randy Jo Hobbs! He was a great bass player. Rick Derringer is on record saying that Randy was one of the best. Unfortunately, his heroin habbit did him in. It got to the point where he couldn't play anymore. This clp was during the Johnny Winter And days....the "AND" were the McCoy's from 'Hang on Sloopy' fame. So ya, Randy may not have known all the blues tunes , but Johnny kept him for a lot years so that says something right there. Even Tommy Shannon didn't last that long with him.

Clap an ear on some early Procol Harum. The band Robin was with in the 60s before he went out on his own. Before he traded his Gibson for the Fender. Then you'll hear a little bit more between the Hendrix flashes. There's more to him than you think. Listen to one called `Whiskey Train` off of Procol Harum's `Home` CD. I was at this concert! Golden Earring opened and Trower split the bill with Sha-Na-Na. Trower was unbelievable, had the entire hall at winterland in awe, then came Sha-Na-Na (oops!!) That was a mistake Bill Graham made! It was the only time I saw the lights go on inside Winterland and clould see what it looked like almost empty. Nobody stayed for Sha-Na-Na!!! They should have opened the show!

I was at that Toad's show (actually not MTH, but the IH Band's first show of the Schizophrenic tour), and had great intentions of recording it when I got home, but fell asleep! The show was replayed at a later date and I recorded it then, but they didn't play the first three songs of the set (FBI, Once Bitten, Life After Death). Does your recording have these songs? I contacted Wiggy several years later to see if they still had the tape, but new management threw all the old stuff in a dumpster.

Hey Folks, I have a great (cassette) audio tape of MTH from "In Concert" that I still play every once in a while. I recorded it off of WPLR in New Haven. Remember that ABC simulcast the show so one could crank it at home? Of course this was long before stereo signals being broadcast over TV audio or the Betamax. I also have MTH from a WPLR broadcast from Toad's Place in New Haven. Good stuff, plus Ian dropped the "effen" bomb, too. Music was so much fun back then, wasn't it? Be well.

I think the Midnight Special DVD series would have been better if it had been divided up into genres of music. But I suppose they wouldn't sell as many DVDs that way. A Mott The Hoople DVD with complete performances is being planned, along with a strong possibility of a reunion.

Do you know what song(s) they did on Midnight Special? I would imagine it's "...Memphis" and ?. It's too bad that the format of the Midnight Special DVDs is so rigid. T. Rex also played "Hot Love", Stories did "Top Of The City" (a power pop rocker totally unlike "Brother Louie") and The Hollies did "Magic Woman Touch". Would love to see those and more.

Who knows, with Juno and Life on Mars making noise for our band, the producers might have a change of heart. I WAS told by an operator about six months ago that they Have no plans at this time to include the MTH performance... so that does imply a possible change of mind. All that said, we know that we are a minority of the buying public and fans of other good acts are just as disappointed as we are that their band didnt make the cut either.

I stopped at seven DVDs, complete with the acts you mentioned (except the NY Dolls-didnt know about that one!) and performances by Aerosmith, Bowie, The Cars, AC/DC, Rod Stewart, Al Green, & Kiss (doing Black Diamond, no less!). Yeah, its definitely not a rip-off, its just missing the crown jewel as far as Im concerned. And like you say, with the benefit of hindsight, the producer of this series has to know what an influence MTH has been on rock since their heyday. (continued)

Yes I am certain you are right. That Midnight Special series is disappointing. Nearly everything on it has to be a Top 10 single or else it's not eligible. The one glaring exception is The New York Dolls. They are on there, but no Mott The Hoople, who clearly were just as influential as NYDs. But the series isn't totally worthless. I bought and kept some of them. T. Rex, Argent, The Hollies, and Todd Rundgren are on there, all of interest to me.

moorlock2003, I have a distinct memory of Mott The Hoople doing Midnight Special (99% sure that it was not In Concert). A black soul group was hosting the show and the singer introduced MTH with quite a flourish before they tore into "Memphis". The recent Midnight Special DVD series has no plans to release that performance-I cancelled my subscription, it was the only reason I started buying them.

Yeah, poor Steve Knight never gets a mention. Seems to be airbrushed from Moutain's history. Great version of the song. Did you know that the version of this song on the Woodstock 2 Album wasn't recorded at the festival at all ? They made such a rubbish attempt at it with Felix forgetting the words and cues missed that a better version was recorded at a gig in New York and was spliced into the Woodstock tapes.

I agree with many of the comments. This is just an amazing song, and one that I think will last. It is so well put together and the vocals unforgetable. Would have loved to seen them. I did see what was left of Mountain in 75 I think. I got stuck directly in front of Leslie's amp. I could literally here nothing but a tone for 45 minutes afterwards. The pain lasted a day or two. Worth it.

Wow I did a little research on Felix and I had heard of him with Cream, but didn't know of him in Mountain. Anyway it seems his wife shot him in 83. What the hell happened there? Also you mentioned his health was suffering during this time.What was wrong? This was a great band.

In his own musical way robin trower is one of the greatest innovators of Acid Funk,and when I saw him in Pensacola,Florida at the Sanger theater,I learn how to sound engineer from Mr.Trower;at that theater at the age of 12,I use to watch many movies at the Sanger;his sound effects sounded clear like the sound from a motion picture,and from then on and even today,I set my mixing board the same way,as though the sound actually is walking across the stage; thank you Mr.Trower.

Robin just really enjoys playing this song,, you can tell by the grin on his face everytime he strums that hissy sounding chord (pardon my ignorance of technical terms). the vocals are perfectly pitched and toned, no fancy technical mikes or "pitchy" issues like alot of people have these days..
