Watch this film along with "Bald Mountain" segment in FANTASIA. That version was truly frightening and a great film, yet there's that basic "Disney" touch to temper the horror somewhat (I'm a Disney fan, so I mean that nicely). But this film, using the entire piece by Mussorgsky, is imho more creepy than the FANTASIA version. Just scary as hell, and I mean that as a compliment.

This is a technique called pin screen animation, made by the husband wife team Alexeieff and Parker. They would use up to a million pins on a field, shape them, sculpt them into images, photographing one frame at a time, shifting the lights to get these spectacular effects. Painstaking, brilliant process done by highly gifted, original artists. Music by Mussorgsky, story by Gogol.

I like this, Windsor McCay was a great animator, but I think it was Disney who really took this and give it its 'boost'.. I think Disney made stuff like this relate to kids and adults. Whereas, in my opinion, Gertie the Dinosaur might have was used as a sort of after dinner entertainment?

I kind of think it seems easier! You just draw directly on, a bit like a flip-book. However, I think I remember reading that, when he made this particular reading, Len Lye didn't stick to individual frames. He just painted right onto the film strip, regardless of where the frames where- just sort of playing around with shapes and patterns etc. But his stuff like "Free Radicals" seems like it was alot more difficult!
