perhaps to intimediate users, and definately so for the more advanced, however, if you're just starting out expressing yourself on the computer, without any human guidence many people would be truely lost (I've seen this many times). True to my word, FL Studio is a brilliant, innovative, very visual and highly user-friendly piece of software, but I don't think it's aimed largely at the complete novice.

It depends. The talk box vibe doesn't rub me the right way because so many modern rap songs are layered with it, most of them fairly terrible. It was a big thing in the 70's; if you've ever seen someone singing with a thin tube in their mouth, that's a talk box. They sound quite a bit different and it all depends on what sound you prefer, I believe the vocoder is much more useful because you can run vocals, drums, any sound through it and get a cool effect.

Depends. Vocoder typically is equated with things like this video; a kind of robotic, futuristic sound. Talkbox is more of a funky thing. I think the vocoder is better because it can retain far more parameters of sound. I'd recommend a rackmount vocoder over a set top synth like this one because they can take any kind of carrier (a vocoder is taking a modulator, for example in this it's the guy's voice, and using it against a carrier, which in this is this synth's built-in sounds).

Vocoders are based of on gates and filters. You need a source and a formant. In this case the EWI with breath sensor set to self oscillate is the source audio going into the vocoder. Plug a mic into the formant and your voice triggers the EWI sounds. Remember, the most important thing is to set the wind controller to self oscillate by turning up the wind/breath sensor gain. Hope this helps.

Thanks for the reply. I play the ewi too and I've been looking for a vocoder+ effects processor for ewi and sax. I know the Boss se-50, 70 and VF1 have them. I've never used one though. So any advice you've got would be great. Are you singing the all the basic pitches I can hear or is the vocoder pitching too. Cheers Pete

I'm testing vocoder effects in KORG KAOSS PAD KP3. KORG says that these effects are derived from RADIAS engine. I felt that it lacks variation, but sound quality is good; clean and fat.

It's great value. Does pretty much everything from modern/digital to a decent analog emulation (obviously it's not true analog, it's not even VA). Could use more presets since programming is kinda tedious - you basically need to use the included computer software to do it...working with the LED dials is more "trial and error". But the few presets included showcase what the R3 is capable of.

I'm somewhat struck by the similarities between this and the Alesis Micron... Not saying the Micron sounds as good, but it's got a modulation matrix, 3 envelopes & 2 LFOs for each pattern, can record sequences as well as modular data sequences, etc etc

It depends on what you need. R3 does only virtual-analog and vocoder sounds, so if you're searching for a synth for pianos and organs R3 isn't the one. M3 can do all types of sounds with great quality, but it is sample-based. So R3 is better if you want to do analog leads, basses and stuff like that. Korg M3 can do everything.

i'm currently thinking of buying a synth. however, in the music shop i went, they only have Korg R3, and Korg M3 (the huge workstation). at this point, i'm seriously considering of buying this Korg R3, because it's cheaper, and more compact than Korg M3. however, i am still confused, as to the sound-banks & synth-quality, do you think Korg R3's sounds is good enough, even when compared with Korg M3 ? any info would be really appreciated! kinda need it ASAP. thx

I hope you weren't referring to Teddy Riley. Even though he has rapped on and produced many hip hop hits he's also done fantastic R&B and pop work. He's a multiplatinum producer and a bonafide hit maker. As for the Vocoder, you have to be able to play an instrument in order to use it (unlike Auto Tune). Teddy is a musician with chops. Check out the "Trax & Teddy Riley in LA" video and see for yourself.

Of those only Kraftwerk has used the Sennheiser Vocoder VSM-201. YMO has used the Roland VP-330 Vocoder Plus MkI and the Moog 16-Channel MBVO 327A Vocoder. Jean-Michel Jarre has used the EMS Vocoder 1000 (not sure which version), 2000W MkI, and the Korg VC-10 Keyboard/Vocoder. Kraftwerk does have in their inventory EMS Vocoders (including the 5000) but I know of NO recordings of theirs featuring it!!! Sorry it took me a week to answer your questions. The most important question is about what the sound source is for the synth..Its the Korg 707 thats pictured and played in this video. The axis is midi'e to control that keyboards sound.the keyboard is set to also play the same sound..I love this cheesy Korg 707 because I can quickly edit the sounds in it.faster than any keyboard from the 80's.:)

Very nice cover. I love the chords. One question, at 1:31 when you put emphasis on "...get it..." , I've heard that effect several times in vocoder songs. How do you do that? So as you go down that chord are you also bending the pitch down as you do it?

That's a great question..It's possible to sing the wrong notes but play the right notes and therefore sound cool..But on this song i sang the right notes so I had a mix of my real voice with the vocoder. I'd say its 85% vocoder sound. The real voice is needed for the transients that are involved with vocals. On this device i can pick what frequency I want for the mic. I picked 2 hertz..that setting sounded the best that day.

I used the brass preset on the Korg 707..but I used the real time sliders to adjust it for the vocoder. The sliders make the korg 707 the best used keyboard for things like the talkbox and the vocoder. it also has aftertouch.
