Malena is right, the girl is NOT Johana Copes. Her name is Lorena Yacono, a real beauty, and no mean "milonguera". However JCCopes and his daughter did perform and teach together extensively over years. You can find on the net interesting comments by both of them on the tricky and not so tricky aspects of the limited expressive palette of the father-daughter tango "partnership".

Thank you so much for posting this. I really like it, although I'm not quite sure why exactly. Most of the tango I like would be what I'd call "Argentine show tango". Basically professional showdance style. This is one of the few tangos I've seen that looks like it might be possible for a non-professional to dance, but that also appeals to me as a viewer.

Because most of the moves we do in lindy hop, we got from the old clips. When lindy hop was being rediscovered, dancers from that clip were the ones who taught people how to dance. Why was it weak? What makes it in poor taste?

It's not any kind of issue of principle on my part, but simply that I'm unable to find anything in this dance that would atract me in the slighest. I fully acknowledge that this may say as much about me as it does the dance. I have the same problem as regards the ballroom jive, which is similarly frantic, jerky and unattractive.

That's adjectives for you! I guess it's all in the eye of the beholder, who in this instance happens to be me. As for sea slugs, I know nothing about them. For all I know, they may be hermaphroditic, as may indeed have been Harpo Marx (his four children were all adopted). I guess I'm into 'elegant' and 'sensuous', to neither of which adjectives could even the most ardent supporter of Lindy Hop surely lay any claim? Once more, I loved Harp Marx, but not for his elegance or sensuousness.

Like Lindy Hop, Harpo was indeed entertaining (and silly), but was he 'attractive' in the visual sense? When did I mention 'merit'? It may just be that I've led a somewhat sheltered life, but I've never personally tried to make a baby on the dance floor. Had I ever done so, though, it would more likely have been to the strains of the Rhumba than the Lindy Hop, physical penetration during the course of which would, I imagine, be exceedingly fleeting and precarious.

Unattractive is an odd word to use to describe a dance. To use your Harpo Marx analogy, the man was incredibly entertaining to watch. Similarly Lindy is incredibly entertaining to watch. It's also loads of fun to dance. You seem to be implying that because a couple isn't trying to make a baby on the dance floor that the dance is without merit. That's an exceptionally narrow minded view of dance.

I'm an avid dancer and the only reason my experience of the Lindy Hop is limited is because I find it unattractive in the extreme. Going back to my original analogy, if a male sea slug is attracted to a lady sea slug, then does that make that lady sea slug attractive? The answer must be: only to another sea slug. Harpo Marx had a long and happy marriage, so someone clearly found him attractive, but did anyone in this world ever watch him on screen and think: "What an attractive man"?

Interesting. So do you consider that 'attractiveness'='sultriness'+'seductivess'? I see them as three very different things. So while I agree that Lindy is (usually, but not always) neither sultry nor seductive, I still find it a very attractive dance. Mind you - with your Harpo association, sounds like your experience of Lindy is a bit limited. For sexy dances - Rhumba can fit that bill, but it pales beside certain bits of flamenco, AT & contemporary I've seen recently, to name but three.

It may indeed be a matter of eyes. No doubt a sea slug is attractive in the eyes of another sea slug. When I watch Rhumba being performed expertly, I conjure up images of sultry encounters between dashing young men and seductive young ladies. By contrast, Lindy Hop always conjures up for me images of Harpo Marx. I liked Harpo Marx but have never associated him with sultriness or seduction. If you do, then I guess it's a case of "Chacun a son gout".

Man this was great!! For years now I have tried to find the name of this group & this song but had no luck. I never ever heard it on the radio. I only knew of it from the video back in the early days of MTV. For you kids MTV *USED* to play music videos 24/7/365. This was one of the good videos they had. Man is it good to see & hear it again after doing a massive google search using the only clues I knew to use of free yourself lyrics. Great tune & great beat!!!
