That's why I wrote ... By: GolumTR. on 23 Feb 08, 22:49:22 That's why I wrote dueling with Armstrong rather than playing. They had to fight hard to be the dominant soloist.
Even though they didn't like each other, Hawkins couldn't cut Armstrong with that ragtime slap tonging he was doing. A human being can hold that up long enough to compete with a man like Louis.
Once he incorporated Armstrong-style legato phrasing into his technique, he would become Coleman Hawkins all over again.

It was when I was in the Fletcher Henderson band that I learned about this. I knew Hawk then and he just couldn't even stand the name Armstrong. I used to love Louis so much and when I'd speak about him Hawkins didn't like it at all." -- Cootie Williams
I've never heard of ... By: GolumTR. on 23 Feb 08, 17:42:51 I've never heard of Prince Robinson. But if you listen to Bean's early records he's still adapting Sidney Bechet's style to the instrument. In fact, Coleman would deny that early records were recordings of him, embarressed by what he saw as a primitive style.
Only after dueling with Armstrong in the Fletcher Henderson Orchestra would he become the Hawk we know and love.
