My feeling is that this would have been played at about this tempo in Mozart's day, but that tastes have changed. "Romance" today would also imply some greater freedom in tempi, and with a greater dynamic range. But the playing is beautiful.

This is a very odd criterion by which to judge the tempo of a piece of music absolute. What in Mozart's score or in the context which gave rise to this work (about which we know little) has anything to do with a beautiful woman entering a ballroom? This post is an example of the many posts here which presume judge the objective worth of the performance on personal tastes. So speaking subjectively myself, I think there's a kind of lilting grace to this performance that's tremendously pleasing.

Although I haven't heard this one by the various forms (slow speeds, rate of rythem,etc.)in which his 'Romance Andante' is performed. This is the manner in which our endearing Mozart most likely would have played. I feel cool breezes and see green meadows and blossoming tree's every time I hear this version. It sometimes makes me want to take the hand of the women I love and find such a place ,between each stillness of every thought.

They are playing presto, not allegro, but I like that in this tempo. I think, that notation "allegro", "presto" etc. doesn't obligate the performer too much. I've heard Requiem conducted by Karajan. Introitus was played in grave tempo, not adagio (as in the partiture), but it was very acurate. Very good performance 5/5:)

When I first started listening, the brisk tempi surprised me as well. In ALL the movements. In this last one, I was actually a little startled! But I found the tempi pleasing in every case. Sure, it's not the "standard reading," but what's wrong with providing an alternate take, particularly given the amazing technical proficiency of the performers? I don't know what you mean with the term "12-tone music" but just to be precise I have to say that this particular piece is from Webern's freely atonal phase and is not built with 12-tone rows. There are, though, times when the music reaches total chromaticism or at least is very close to it.

There seems to be a very limited set of emotions "permissable" in pop music. It's basically "love, happiness, love, slight melancholy and love". Write something scary, intense, weird or emotionally complex and people start to frown. Unless they're watching a horror movie, of course.

I honestly don't understand why these pieces in particular and some of his piano works are considered 'difficult' works (to listen to). I find some of his songs challenging, but this piece is brilliant, intense music regardless of how it was composed. Besides which, half the horror film genre relies on musically apeing Webern. So that must make him a seminal pop culture figure!

Can ye recommend me the most atonal and chaotic piece by Webern? Just found out this awesome genious and the disturbed atmosphere together with almost hysterical chaotic atonality is absolutely most brilliant music I've ever heard.

I agree with zmeadows87. I think you would have to try hard to get bored listening to a Webern piece. I find such brevity and compactness both admirable and welcoming.

I would rather recomend Berg as Webern is to compact in most of his pices to get a understanding for whats happening (opus 9 as a extrem example. its over before most people even notice it). In addition to that berg is still somewhat "tonal" or at least some parts are (:
