Oysters, for example, have been harvested beyond all reason, and they are now weaker and more prone to disease. I swim with wild sharks as part of my job and have studied them for years. In the main it is mistakes as they a pretty much blind. But if threatened of course they will attack. As to hypnotising a great white, it would have to be for a shorter time as they can only breathe when moving x x x

Some species of shark can suck water in their mouths by closing their gill openings, which means they can keep their gills aerated without moving. I dont think reef sharks are one of those though (though they do 'sleep' in current areas), it takes a while for sharks to lack oxygen if they're in water.
