So what if it is based on another story and that children were asked the write a story with a new ending. And as you put it, Gilad could have come up with an ending in which the shark would have eaten the fish after all. But he did not. He might not have been very creative by replacing the animals; it shows how he is. Btw, he was kidnapped on a base outside Gaza, but near Gaza. And after the Gaza pullout even.
