I don't know. I haven't used the supernova. As far as I know the sound is similiar, but it has more parameters to work with.

That depends on your personal preferences. K-station offers so much better hands on feeling when you have almost every function available on the front panel. I don't think you can compare them soundwise. Novation and korg have their own unique sound. Im not 100% sure but I believe that the K-station might even be cheaper than the MK. Both of them are good machines, but i would get the K-S.

The K Station is a sound module so no need to buy anything additional. As you can see in the vid Harril is demonstrating some of the sounds the synth produces. If you have other rackmount modules then you can use the K station to control these too via the midi out

I have both the Remote 25SL and just got the nocturn. I'm loving it so far. It's a great complement to the setup. However, my nocturn acts funky sometimes. For example, if I turn the encoder too fast sometimes it doesn't respond, or only responds partially. I also just saw one of the values moving on the encoder without me touching it. Weird, but awesome other than that. Very intuitive.

Novation Supernova saves a prayer

Hear the Supernova attempt to make sounds like Duran Duran on their Rio album. The Supernova needs to be twiddled, it has 3 oscillators not all are needed to recreate early synth sounds. Here is an attempt at sounding like Save A Prayer which has those two memorable synth lines both recreated here.

I have the pcr-m1. Its overall good but there are a few things that i dont like; the modulation and pitch bottons are not good, hard to use. and you cant just hook up the keyboard to your computer, you have to manually install it wich is tricky. and sometimes when you disconnect it and reconnect, it doesnt work. sounds like a lot of complaints, but its really good when you have it working. i reccomend it

My 2 cents on the Edirol: I have the PCR-1, it came before the M1 with a soundcard built in and no MIDI or battery/AC (its all USB). And it has a shift key for the knobs, like the ReMOTE. I bought it for the keys, they are not like other keys because they are pretty shallow and more like computer keys. Its easier to get consistent velocities out of with my sloppy playing style :)

heh, id take real knobs that could fall off over virtual knobs anyday! You cant beat real hardware in terms of control,having to boot up a computer anytime you want to use a synth, and turning a knob with no name on it, while staring at screen just doesnt cut it for me.

Are there any keys on your Xio that have a loud rattle to them when let go? I'm now on my 3rd Xio (first two had issues). However, I noticed tht ALL THREE Xio's I had.., both of the (B) keys were very noisy. When you press then down and just let go of them there's this very annoying rattle. This is supposed to be a semi-weighted keybed and I expected a little better quality from the keys due to it being semi-weighted.

the keys are very good for synth use, but for piano/organ use you need to tweak a lot with dinamics parameters. i loved the filters, more then the alesis ion/micron ones. when you use it via usb you don't need the power adapter. ask yourself, do you need a little VA, a controller and an Audio Interface all in one?

what you need? i needed a VA, a controller and an Audio Interface. the xiosynth is perfect for me. i use it with my macbook both live and studio. main cons: - LFOs pre-assigned - no aftertouch - pot jump only in control status - few (trivial) OS bugs on display text - no physical midi in (only via usb)

yes, it's a synth. it ALSO has MIDI control galore. unless you need pads/triggers this will do most anything short of polyaftertouch. Besides being 8-part multi, SN2 has way more voices, FX and osc shaping+modulation than Xstation. does Xstation have FM, sync, ringmod & combfilter? Skew, Distortion curves, EG3 scaling, LFO offset, editable arpeggios/sequences, on and on. I dunno if Xstation has all that(and lots more).

Biggest differences vs Supernova 1 & 2 is the FM. Opens it up immensely - FM brings in the spacy organs, elec. pianos, harps, DX7-type keys, mallets and all sorts of bizzare madness that only FM can do. It's a whole diffrenet spec from 'virtual analog'. Also the SN2 has extra goodies like dual filters(LP+LP,LP+BP,LP+HP,notch,BR,BP+BP,BP+HP,HP+HP) combfilter, 'supersaw' (saves poly using just one osc to simulate up to 8 detuned saws). More FX, i think the vocoder is on SN2 only. try Google.

I would agree with that, I used to have a lot of the old novation stuff (KS rack, B Station, D Station, A station and Nova) and allthough they sound lush and very smooth they are deff not analogue, I think they have their own character that compliments other stnths rather well, on the market now for a SN2 as well as I sold all my old gear

Yes, with all the different gain stages things can ugly if you overdo it: set all 3 oscillator levels past ~70% and the program volume over 50%. You also have to use the Q normalization to compensate for high resonance or it will distort (in a bad way). This caused me some disappointment at first, but after some adjustment and familiarity while it's not a problem. Frankly since getting familiar with it I've never had this problem and can get most any sound i want without distorting.

Does your Novation overdrive a lot? I remember there being a lot of crackling and distortion on some patches. Mine did, In many cases i couldn't control it. Really loved that synth though.

(continuing reply to XY2theGG): ....however veterans looking for a replacement for their old analog poly are probably not going to be convinced. while it CAN do most of the sounds of the old 'fat bastards', it does NOT behave like a VCO synth - It's digital through and through,but the filter can be overdriven so this goes a long way... but the raw oscillator sound is unmistakeably digital as are the fx. great phaser/chorus though - i have a Juno6 and it cops that sound very closely.

I just randomly bought this today and it totally rocks. I have been through over 10 midi controllers in the past few years and this is the best. I make custum templates and this board makes it soooo easy! automap is fantastic. I don't care that I NEVER received my RMA for the original remote 25 that never worked... (I do have many more novation products and the support HAS been great over the years, I just needed to get that out of my system). this is the board to buy!

There is a Template Editor available for the SL. This will allow you to open and pre-made templates for the SL or any other Novation controller keyboard and edit them. Or you can make a new template. All editing can then be saved to disk and uploaded to the SL hardware. You can also edit templates on the SL by moving a knob, then pressing edit. You'll be much quicker using the software editor though!

The SL's Automap features (learning parameters on-the-fly) is only available when used with the Automap Server and VST and or AU plug-ins. This does not use the standard MIDI CC messages so cannot be used to control hardware synths. To control hardware synths via MIDI CC, NRPN etc, messages, then you can use non-automap templates on the SL. There are 34-40 template slots on the SL for these (depending if you are using automap templates as well).

The button LEDs are not set to correspond to mutes etc in the Ableton template. This is because the buttons are multi-function, so setting up LED for 1 button will work for e.g Mutes, but not when the same button is used for controlling part of a Live instrument. You can edit the buttons to show LEDs.... press the button then 'edit' then change display to LED. I would not suggest this for Live template, but you can use it on a standard MIDI CC template.

I notice the focus of the Novation is the VST market. I have a rack of a dozen modules from an EX-8000 to a K3M and use a D-70 as a master keyboard. I want to switch to a MIDI controller but want to know if it can handle remote hardware as well. Do I need to have software editors for my rack gear for it to work (manually mapped I presume) or can I create maps that when switched to link directly to my rack gear? But after a while working with it, I only use the encoders now, becouse of the analog faders and pots (catching parameters is circular to use and imprecise ) Is there a version to come with motorfaders and a 2. row of encoders (maybe with led rings around both), and leds on the buttons? On the remote sl compact there are leds on the buttons, do they correspond to mutes in Ableton live?

I appreciate the advice, but I actually just got the 25SL about 3 days ago, and can't stop loving it. The padkontrol isn't a very big deal for me, the drum pads on the novation are sufficient for sketching out ideas, then I just program the beats into Redrum for better timing. Automap is killer, and the abundance of controllers are prime. I had to sell my MPC2000XL to afford it, but given the mega increase in functionality and productivity in Reason, I haven't looked back.

hi Sulleric, no I don't use automap. I prefer to patch my knobs and faders manually the way I like it. All u have to do is to make your remote work with reason - then start your Track! Remote Override by right-clicking and assigning your knobs and sliders to a parameter on a Reason device. Attention! select "Learn from Remote" in the same window. That's All Folkz! This is so amazing, I keep coming back to watch it, hoping I can learn something. You obviously know your instrument very well. I've had the ReMOTE 25SL for about 2 months now, and I still don't understand how you have this set up to do everything you do, without even switching instruments in Reason. Are you using Automap or a custom midi template? Also, is there any way I could convince you to e-mail me the rns for this song? I'm so curious...

Oh thats not so spectacular. Its a 20Sek Timelineloop in Reason. The beatbreaks are programmed pattern in Redrum. The Faders on the novation are logged to the reason main mixer. The only thing wich could be kinda work is to make the tune sounds PLUMP!!!! :-)

thats pretty phat, nice build and breakdown man, nicely dropped in, I heard the reason loop you dropped in but its kinda alright the way you done it, kik is phat. How did you record the audio? seperate then combined it? Came out well ;)

great vid on this piece. Is this simply a digital synth? or more like the x station which i have Midi board with some internal sounds?. Does it have Arrangements such as rythms/beats on the board to play along with. I have the x station roland G7 but looking for one more synth with grind that has some arrangements like drums built in. if no drums on this piece no sweat ill use the mv-880. thnx for the vid again and plz answer this will help me decide my purchase. I hate VA synths, but this is the only VA I will ever consider buying, because it sounds out of this world. In my opinion the best VA ever made. What sets it apart form the others are the reasonably fast envelopes. Best alternative for the JP8 if you can't afford the real one. Much better than the Arturia.

the hartnol brothers used abotu 4 supernovas ( mk 1 and 2) racked up for about 5 years, then went more or less the softsynth route in the end, which is a shame. They also used the oberheim xpander- its all over the second album- as well as an oscar and jp6

The X-Station has only 8 notes of polyphony and a less extensive set of parameters but they all have that beautiful novation sound. X-Station is a great synth.

The polyphony is lower and they dont have as extensive parameters or modulation capabilties, but they all sound great. The Novation Supernova is no tank either. It too has a lot of plastic and a thin aluminum casing. Waldorfs are built like Panzer tanks.

I wouldnt say the SH-201 is a horrible board. Its quality is the same as the JP-8000. They are both made of plastic. I owned the JP-8000 and traded it. The sound wasnt for me. The SH-201 is supposed to have the same sound engine as the VA engine on the V-Synth. My V-synth sounds excellent but I doubt the SH-201 sounds as expensive. The X-Station KS series and K-Station have the same character as the Supernova.

the sh-201 is studio-only and of horrible build quality - one of the worst Rolands ever. the jp-8000 is a much better live board - but the sound has been exceeded by SN2. and no an x-station does not sound better than a SN2. do real research and get experience before making crazy claims like that. the appeal of the X-station is that it's a K-sation synth w/ an audio interface built-in. nice for portable music-making but again it's cheaply constructed. that's it.

SH-201 got the supersaw waveform, it can make some really fat sounds. You can also split the keyboard, and you will at the same time get 2 part multitimbral. Listen to some demos. I think the sound on SH-201 is very similar to JP8000 but prolly better sound quality.

X-station is like a midicontroller version of the K-station sorta, so you get a midi controller with a K-station synth on. the X-station is mono timbral, so make sure you are aware of that. a Novation KS synth is 4 part multitimbral, and a Supernova II is 8 part multitimbral (can play 8 sounds on 8 different midi channels at a time).
