I ended up getting addicted to hydromorphone (aka Dilaudid), which is about 3x more powerful than heroin on a weight for weight basis. At first I was just eating the pills, then I decided to try snorting them one day. It was way more powerful, so I kept doing that. Then one day, I decided to try the needle. That was the biggest rush of all, so I kept to that for about a month until I sought help. It's almost a year later now, and I'm still suffering the consequences.

The best thing is to completely deny yourself any affiliation with opioids. "Just say no". If you don't know what you're missing you don't miss it. People become addicted when they find a drug they relate to, so know yourself, if you suspect you will really love heroin, don't take it. Fortunately for me my drug of choice is LSD, and thats a drug you can't form a addiction to if you still want to be able to function at all. Each trip demands planning, you can't do anything for two days.

I ask because the true nature of man, enlightnement/satori, involves a delightful acceptance of both control being built into our being, together with total freedom. Do drugs not perform these same acts? And are these poles not missing from everyday life - we do not get controlled enough, and do not have enough freedom. Do the drugs take over and make that right? I would hope this does change within the next twenty to thirty years because people should have the right to ruin their own lives if they so wish. Don't stop them, just try to help them save themselves. That's always right. If they can't save themselves, they wouldn't have anyway, regardless of your "input". I think the reason this won't happen is A) Governments have to do it (fat chance) B) It's too intelligent (thereby too scary for many, especially those with vested power) C) It sees drug dependence for what it is, as sickness. Once you do that, you have to label other forms of currently criminalised behaviour as sicknesses (which they likewise are) which changes the whole encumbent penal system D) Any change for those who are weaker is frowned upon. Really humanity hasn't scratched the surface in regards to researching itself. And it's so subject to so many influences that it becomes redefined every six or seven years in developed countries. If you want to know why Germany emerged from the 19th Century to be a major player in two world wars, I believe it was because until 1871, German lands were composed of 39 independent states or provinces, with no overarching nation. That allowed culture to flourish, and free thought to reign.

i would love to see one of such said graphs. the only true conclusions made by scientists on the similarities between physical and psychological addictions are that they are addictions. in a 2003 publication of nature- i am not exactly sure which month- three scientists wrote about an experiment to find a chemical basis for psychological addiction. they could not find any- not only are we not in the embryonic stages of this research-- we haven't even fertilized yet.

I think you could get a graph with possible clouds of information (sorry but I've done an IT networking degree at university) but these clouds would be fairly vague. So speculative you would question there use. It is true that scientific data in this area is in its embryonic stages but there are psychological interpretations of addiction that are quite revealing. I'd just like more scientific input into them, as I'm sure you would, but the real studies haven't been done yet.

I don't know much about the neurotransmitters that interplay with gambling or any other activity where a foreign chemical isn't introduced but I guess I find it kind of interesting. I would like to see a graph demonstrating how that works. With heroin its clearly something introduced into the system but gambling is obviously a closed chemical system comparatively.

you seem to be getting a little off topic. we're talking about a the physical, not the psychological. endorphins and dopamine are naturally occurring chemicals that do not themselves lead to withdrawal. people can develop habits that are hard to quit due to complex psychological dealings (in this case, gambling is no different from nose picking or fingernail biting). if endorphins and dopamine lead to withdrawals, we would all perpetually have withdrawals all the time.

djrealfancy-i wish you were right, but you arent...i was addicted to heroin for years then got clean and have been clean for 3-4 years and i wish i could say the only thing that draws people back to using was the high..nope, there is this thing called PAWS, post acute withdrawal symptoms..they are the changes that happen to the brain when the drug is no longer administered...Paws can sometimes linger for a lifetime..

not addiction. you're right about mind over matter however. addiction is one of the most overused metaphors (for bad habit) in the english language. heroin feels good (im guessing, never tried it), that's why one craves it...not b/c some invisible "entity" causes you to be "addicted". im sure i'll get flamed, but there's this thing called "self-discipline" people need to practice...if you beat heroin, you aren't beating "addiction", you are using discipline and living responsibly. peace

The Doors were excellent musicians. The VU weren't, but their primitive approach didn't demand all that much skill. VU music is life and human emotion. There's at least one great VU love song,"Mirror." Doors is fantasy and no love, just sex. The VU versus hippies thing may have been self-righteous types telling the VU that they shouldn't be so negative - missing the point of what the group was doing. The VU were not mean guys, but you could get really tired of that.

I got off my ass and went to rehab then a recovery house and then i got a job and worked, worked and worked more! I got rid of all my using friends, and dressed nicer and put some pride in myself! U can do the same thing! I am clean off heroin and cocaine for 3 years now! But i still drink occasionly and smoke the odd joint! Its easy to do if you set your mind to it!

lol No I bought it when it came out and thought it was one of his best releases. To be honest with you, this is not my favorite version of this song performed by him. My favorite version is the B-side of "Shock to the System", unfortunately I have yet to be able to acquire it in any form. I use to play it on the juke-box in the bar I use to frequent and that was the only place I could listen to it.

No, sadly, he does not. A lot of bands and songs are that way however. But Billy sings on a MUCH Deeper and Far More Meaningful Level than many know or realize, UNLESS they really pay attention to the lyrics, AND THINK. Billy is NOT some low-I.Q. man with a great voice!! VERY INTELLGENT SINGER AND PERFORMER!!!!! "Cyberpunk" was one of his best, and most misunderstood, pieces. Sad really. TOTALLY A GREAT ALBUM!!!!! SOLID from beginning to end!!!!!
