I was in high school when MTV first came out, and with the exception of the hard rock and metal videos they used to show all the time at first(when MTV was only on for a certain amout of hours and the rock videos kinda looked like concert footage, where the band DIDNT look into the camera all posin and shit), this was probably the only filmage that i could dig. I wish more bands or "artists" would have followed Herbie's lead and made cool, surreal shit like this.Everything else is posin shit!!!

Modern software and computer recording technology is supposedly very powerful. Over the past year and a half I have WASTED my time and money trying to make my music on pro-tools and then Logic. I have found both programs to be a complete failure. Over complicated and full of errors and bugs that have all but strangled my creativity. Many times I walk away from my useless computer wishing I had a 16 track tape deck and mixing board. The companies that release defective software kill creativity.

Ya'll is deaf if you think their is anything out of tune......Your ears aren't used to altered dominant harmony.....What you think you're hearing as out of "tune" is the fact that these guys aren't resolving to any "resting" tones...meaning the 1,3 or 5.....they are superimposing extensions ontop of the basic progression.......

"i can not believe some people can relate this to elevator music. c'mon are you serious? herbrie hancock, dave holland, pat metheny & jack dejohnette have never created "elevator music" collectively or in any solo setting." It his similarities to smooth jazz. Not saying I don't like it, and the musicianship is farrr better than "elevator music". But there are definitely similarities: i.e. the back beat (one TWO three FOUR), the guitar tone, etc...

P.S. Herbie Hancock in particular is a genius at spontaneously reharmonizing tunes because he can hear other sound-worlds that he wishes to superimpose on a tune. Check out his work with Miles in the 60's, particularly the reharms os standards. I recommend "the complete live at the plugged nickel". JB

Sorry dude, I don't think I get your meaning at all. There is a very specific harmonic form to this tune and a strong rhythmic foundation. The musicians are not thinking about what they are playing; they are hearing it, which comes with dedicated practice....and talent of course, but mainly practice. Does that answer your question?
