Obama kept Gates to cover his ass on Iraq. If things go well, Gates has all the connections in Iraq to draw things down. Being pragmatic, that is not likely, and an extension of stay in Iraq will continue and Gates is the constancy. Of course Obama got elected over Hillary Clinton because he PROMISED otherwise, but evidently Obama likes to give lip service to progressives and those against the Bush wars because he think we will not do anything to oppose him.

The comments here are hilarious, especially the ones that start with "Change?", or accuse Obama of being a liar. He always intended he would be a non-partisan, pragmatist leader. So his picks say that about also. Who cares if these people have worked in Government before, the change isn't new people, it's new ideas. It takes 10,000 hours to master a task, so get you have new leadership (Obama is the Change) empowering experienced hands (All of Obama's picks have depth of experience).
