Molto Vivace- exactly how Beethoven wrote it and conducted it at its premier in Vienna. Although he was totally deaf at the time, witnesses wrote that he was waving the orchestra on in a mad tempo. It's too bad the sound & video are a little out of sync. I find it a little disturbing. Picky-picky. Maybe they didn't use cannons because they thought it might frighten the audience, like ours did. The bells (like the cannons) are in the score, like the additional wind band at the end.

Someone may have posted this before, but I think the reason that maestro Abbado looks so amused at times (besides the fact that he must love his job) is that point where everyone starts opening umbrellas (at 3:10) comes during the section of the overture (starting at 2:40) which depicts a thunderstorm. Talk about making it rain! :)

He wasnt too active. He was one of the many people who thought that they couldnt be the only one were right. Anyway, Karajan ran away from the Nazis and Germany, at some point, I think... I really respect him. I don't think he had the same beliefs as Hitler. Its basically making a wrong choice because everyone makes it. It was a mistake, but I don't think we can condemn him as a Nazi for that.
