@super13momome Turning your knitting means that when you finish knitting the row> you are ready to start the next row. If you are knitting another row (garter stitch) then you knit again but if you are making a stockinette stitch then you turn the needle and ready to purl. I'm a beginner and your video makes no sense. It's completely different than the last video I saw which was much easier. I don't understand why yours is so difficult but I can't even tell which end of the thread goes where because you cut out a critical section between :49 seconds and :50 seconds.

@mjgranchester To answer your question. It takes practice to figure out your "tension"-tightness. You don't want to have it too tight or too loose. I recommend watching my video again. Your extra stitches are because you are putting the needle into the wrong place and then you create an extra stitch so watch the video again very carefully. I know you can do it. It just takes practice. I hope you are using size 10 needles or larger since it is easier to learn on larger needles.

hi MrsMoskowitz, i am having trouble in knitting my (first) scarf....i dont know how tight to pull my yarn when i "throw" it over my needle.when i pull it a little bit tight, i cant fit the needle through the loop when i get to the next row.if i let it to loose then i just end up with a hole in my scarf. Also somtimes i accidently miss a stitch causing the width to change in a very noticable way.how can i fix it without having to start all over?!Please Help!!!!

@zeusfavedaughter Hi, I think this is happening because when you did your cast on those stitches might have been loose. The last stitch is often loose so just try pulling down on the part you already knitted. I hope this helps.

I liked this video, but I agree that there should be a serial number like this is part 2 for beginners. Otherwise, how is someone supposed to know what "casting on" is? I've never heard of these terms before I bought a book and THEN came to the internet. To assume that they've watched "casting on" when there is no indication that comes first means failure.

I understand where you're coming from, I had the same question a while back. garter stitch is the patter that arises when you knit every row. Your two basic individual stitches (knit and purl) are arranged in different ways to creat a lot of different "stitches" but what I think are better described as "patterns." So garter stitch is the pattern that comes from knitting every individual stitch. If you watch a few more videos of different stitches/patterns it might become a little clearer.

This is the same way I purl. I was worried I was doing it wrong since I've never seen anyone do it the same way before. I learned how to crochet when I was young & figured out it's much faster & easier to dip the hook into the yarn instead of using my hand to do a yo. When I was first learning to purl, it felt very awkward but got the hang of it once I realized I could dip & scoop instead of pulling the yarn around by hand. Glad to see someone else doing it this way - I feel validated! :)

You're the first person I've seen who purls the same way I do. That's very reassuring! I was afraid maybe I was doing something wrong but it's the only way that felt "right" to me and it appeared that the resulting loop was all oriented the correct way. Nice to see someone else doing it that way too so I know that my technique is "right!" I'm new at this still. :)

@tinaeinars1 When you just twist your cast on, you must twist it 360 degrees in order to be able to knit. A Moebius can have only 180 degrees twist. The 360 degree twist still has two edges and two surfaces whereas the Moebius has one of each, which gives it mirror symmetry and all kinds of magical properties.

I really love this video, as I have said before. I have been practising and yes you do get alot looser knitting. Another problem I have is the working yarn falling off my baby finger when I start knitting and that drives me nuts, so I am trying to figure out a way to hold that yarn, because when you keep changing ways in a project you can tell when you look at your work. I am practising on toys etc, so it really doesnt matter much, how it looks. What is hard for me ---

Yes I wish you could sit next to me for a while to. I really thought I would have more problem with the pearl stitch than the knit stitch. I'm off to practise some more, as it does save my hands and I can knit longer. When I get sore I just switch back to english throwing. Thankyou for the quick response. laurie

@marlib7 FIrst, thank you. You should be able to scoop the stitch without scratching the landing pad with your needle. Aim for the strand a little lower. Then, for tension, ALWAYS put your right forefinger on the completed stitch, which will also help with your thimble problem. Wishing I could sit next to you for a while, because I can tell you are really working at it. I have to push every inch worth of knitting, but get I get fast it, especially with the looser stitches. Good luck!

this is a very good video, the best. But I have two questions. I am a thrower and have arthritis and have been trying to learn continental. When I knit, the finger used for a landing pad needs a thimble or something. Am I correct in thinking that pulling that knit stitch out before you slide it off causes wacky tension. Also do you have some tips for sliding the stitches along the needle, I find that I always have to stop, push up the stitches and retention my yarn. best video award

@L2Belt ok i tried... and i failed haha. i've been really trying to knit right-handed but it seems the only thing my right hand can do is push my work forward. I'm actually right handed but my dad taught me how to knit when i was 6 and i was sitting across from him mirroring what he did. i guess i'm sticking to throwing for now but thanks for the advice and great video =]

@gypsyqueen64 it just takes time to learn the correct tension, you've been knitting 2 days and your work it too tight? i knit for about 5 years with my work too tight haha. just continue to remind yourself to loosen up and try knitting a piece really really loose just to practice the feeling of it, move your hands a little lower on your needles and just keep breathing and relaxing as you knit. =]

@MariaVana What I am saying is to give it a try as pictured. Both hands have work to do. You don't HAVE to flip everything around because you are left handed. The plus side to learning like this is being able to get help as you need it because no one would be put off or confused by your work. Make sense? Good luck either way.

Thank you for this video. I am a self-taught knitter from an old, very old pattern book from the 40's and this is the way it explained how to knit. I always wondered why other knitters said I held my needles "strangely". Now, I know. They are "throwers" and I am not, LOL. And now I have a named method to describe how I knit. I also have always been able to knit a project more quickly than others knitting similar projects. Apparently, this Continental Method answers that, too! Thanks, again!

This video really helped. I tried continental before and had the problem like at 2:48- 2:52 but I kept practicing and my hand has gotten use to holding everything and I use my middle finger for the back part of the loop to make it easier.

So by all means, knitting is not for little old ladies. Soldiers that were in my company traveled throughout Iraq with a project to work on in their rucksack. It was a great stress reliever, I'd recommend this for any guy with a high stress level or labor intense job. Oh yeah....our knitting group was called "Knit Shit". Go knit!

I am a Staff Sergeant in the Army, my last deployment I was teaching a bunch of guys in our platoon how to knit. The only ones interested were the 22-29 year old male Sergeants and Staff Sergeants (key leaders). We were knitting everywhere we went in Iraq. I think it's sad that they HAVE to defend themselves. Due to it being a simple, benign hobby, they shouldn't face such criticisms and/or attacks that make them feel a need to defend and justify their hobby. I know so many guys who refuse to even CONSIDER knitting a 'real hobby'. They see it as something 'girly', thereby not deserving of respect. If they hear tale of a man knitting, they break out all the homophobic jokes in an attempt to get the guy to toe the line. It's all sad...

Usually, if you are buying something with the fancy cables and whatnot, they've been hand-knit. It's just the person who hand-knit the cheaper version did so in a sweatshop for a wage that barely covers food. Learning to knit is a good way to start getting out of that cycle of abuse. Same for buying local w/co-ops, shopping at thrift-stores, learning to sew, etc. Add to the fact that arts & crafts are great stress relief...

Excellent! I appreciate that you show what these stitches actually look like in a piece of knitting at the end of your demonstration. Other videos show how to do certain stitch combos but they don't show what they look like, which is important for visual learners and beginners.
