When I was an undergraduate in college some xx years ago, I thought Nilsson was tops, probably because all the grad students dubbed me "Baby Birgit". I don't think I've ever heard it taken this slow, but I suppose that's probably closer to how Wagner wanted it. Re: Flagstad vs. Nilsson, they both have incredible voices (obviously) and both had unsurpassed artistry. I have to confess that I'm not a big fan of the tempo here, so that's tainting my opinion. My ultimate favourite Liebestod is Norman/Karajan, but Flagstad must take a better seat by default since she recorded the whole opera, as opposed to Norman just recording the Liebestod.

You are so right. Flagstad's voice had a warmth, a feminine warmth if you will that is lacking in Nilsson's rendition, great though it was. I don't mean to compare; both were great great singers. Flagstad also manages to imbue her singing with the sadness, transcending into ecstasy, that puts the final touch of perfection on her interpretation of this music.

if this is true then her parents and possibly her whole family should be ashamed. I mean, she was really little but they went way over board. Personally I like series 4.. I mean it's not my favourite.. but other than Series 1 being my ultimate Favourite, I don't rank the others. Season 4 did have a few moments where you just wanted them to hurry it along.. Taylor was certainly a strange addition and got on my nerves a bit.. but the earthquake episode and the one after were so amazing! So yeah all in all, the pros outweigh the cons :)

It must have been basically accurate considering that it was based on a biograghy. And that wasn't supposed to be the main focus of the film. It was trying to get you to look at Marie Atoinette in a new way. She was just a young girl who had wealth and responsibilty thrust upon her. What do you think a modern teenage party girl would do with seemingly endless weath while she had nothing else to do? It was trying to get you to think differently. And I think it worked.

These 2 were the great wagnerian voices of the mid 20th century. Amazing stamina and beauty. The Guild has a complete Gotterdammerung with these giants. Flagstad's voice just glides with such richness there. She dosen't take the final top note in the duet but it doesn't matter at all. By the end of the evening, for the Immolation, she is still in fresh voice. The recording is put together from several sources. Flagstad and Melchior were one of a kind.
