This is a Turbine Enstrom Helicopter on the Heli Pad of a Greenpeace ship some where off the coast of Ireland. One of the deck straps has not been released correctly, with what was very nearly disastrous consequence. Pilot skill and quick thinking saved the day.

um...thats not true. the airplane can glide, tho some can't gilde to far. the helicopter has a system where if the engine fails you feather the rotors, build up some speed in the rotorhead, and when the copter is 100 feet or less above the ground you pour the pitch into the blades and it floats down

Being a line man at that airport that sold the fuel I can rule out fuel contamination as the cause of the crash. Many flights have been made without incident since the crash. I talked to the owner today who flew up frome NC today. He was going to see the crash sight and visit the pilot. I asked him if this is common because this is most unnatural for a helicopter to do and he said no. Is wired seeing a aircraft take off and know it crashed later... Well at least the pilot is ok. I am a lineman at Washington County Airport in Washington PA. Just today OCT 30th 2008 this exact chopper crashed during the operation of trimming trees for allagany power company. The chopper flew in to Washington where a ground crew set up the saw and we fueled their truck that intrun fuels the chopper at the job site as seen in the vid. The pilot said he heard a loud crack and lost power. He is in the hospital with minor injuries. (continu to next comment)

Having flown on the Navy version of this Helo that seemed to be a Marine 46.The intakes were different from the Navy version and also no external hoist which the Navy version had for search and rescue.Pilot error all the way came in way too hot on a deck that small.Landing during the day was tricky but at night with no moon it was demanding.Its easy to get vertigo when you can't tell the water from the sky!Godspeed......

These helicopters are built so that you can gradually change the pitch of the rotors in flight. So, you can basically reverse the pitch of the rotors, reversing the flow of air. Neat trick.

Na, it's collective pitch. Instead of speeding up the blades to go higher, it changes the pitch of of the blades (while keeping the blades at the same rpm). If the angle of the blades doesn't change, it's call a fixed pitch. That basically just slows down and speeds up the rotor. Real helis (like news chopper ect.) are all collective pitch. But some cheaper rc helis are fixed pitch. If you want to get into rc helis, check out coaxial choppers. They're easy (and fun) to fly inside.

I think they def. have saving instincts. I wanted to test out my newf's water rescue abilities so I pretended like I was drowning. He shot into that water, came up to me, I grabbed onto him, and he pulled me to shore. It was amazing.

aww...this is incredible. I cannot wait to get our Newf out for water rescue training. I've never seen a dog love water so much (I used to be a lab owner) and our Newf will get in the tub and submerse himself in water - he LOVES baths! We never have to hold him down when we bathe him. He'll even sit next to the tub while someone is in the shower...he truly loves the water!

I signed up just so I could post a comment for this video. We went camping when our newf was a 3 mth old puppy and of course had her in the water playing fetch. Our 8 yr old son would be swimming and she would swim back and forth in front of him until he grabbed her coat so she could pull him to shore. If you don't think that's instinct then you're a very ignorant person! These dogs were born to do water rescue just like our Saint insists on keeping us warm if we're outside in the snow.
