really great performance...a couple of notes, from one harpist to another... Your arms were really low, the right arm was even touching the soundboard a lot. Even for the Grandjany method, that's pretty low. Also, because of that, your left thumb was pretty low, although your right thumb looked ok. And, I don't know, maybe this is just me, but usually putting your hand on the soundboard signifies the end of the piece, I don't think I would do it in the middle of the piece...

Actually many of todays great guitarists like Andy Mckee, Don Alder, Don Ross were inspired by Michael Hedges he was playing the harp guitar back in the 80's. He was an innovator way ahead of his time. Unfortunately he's not that well known today.

I've played some that are only 3 euros verses more expensive. The quality of the tone seems to increase with the expense of the instrument. A Steinway piano costs more than a Yamaha, but I prefer a Yamaha. I guess bottom line is whatever makes you happy.

The first one I got in Tucson, AZ in 1975, is supposed to be from Nashville and has the letters RICH etched in it. Haven't seen any since. I'd suggest item MMU-3 from the Dan Moi website in Germany which is a harp made in Hungary and has a similar look and tone for 22 euro.

The shape is square soundbox. The available harp is made of very rare Australian Scented Rosewood, with solid cedar soundboard. Price would be AUS$5,000-, plus packing & shipping. Hi louiese. I am mostly self taught, but had been performing on lutes & guitar for many years before the harp. I worked out some logical fingering for chords & scales, as you would for a piano or guitar etc, & listened to good harpists whenever possible. Hope that helps ! Good luck !

I have never used what would normally be called the "fourth" finger (ie; little finger). I only use this finger in performing flamenco guitar "rasguedo". I'm sorry to find that your love of music has been distorted by your formal education. Most agree that the performance of music is more important than dragging us all down with academic arguments over small, & in this case, seemingly inaccurate details ! the laser harp is just a midi controller really, so it's sole purpose is to trigger something else. and that video is out of sync no matter whether jmj is playing or miming. from actually being on stage with him years ago i would say he don't mime for sure, or he didn't then.

the laser harp is recorded to tape and played, he is not playing it live, if you search on here(youtube), you will find a video of the guy who designed the sound of the laser harp and explains why jarre uses a tape for the laser harp, it may be a real instrument but it is not played live...

I like the traditional looks of these harps and KUDOS to whoever put those designs on them because they are just AWESOME! I'm not much of a history buff when it comes to harps, but I noticed that some of the harps couldn't stand upright by themselves. Because it's a wire strung harp playing (though the harps in the pictures are nylon or gut. With wire strung, you get that lovely bell-like sustaining sound :-) Ann Heymann is fantastic and has done loads to revive and promote the wire strung traditions.

i'm not sure what you mean by your comment, but i think i agree, at least in part. this was a great band to see at an outdoor venue though. they played in Indianapolis in.....maybe '72, i don't remember, but Keaggy blew everybody in the crowd away. i'll never forget that. he is in the Christian "bookstores" now and occasionally gets together with Glass Harp but they don't have the energy or "attack" that they used to.

I remember going to see Glass Harp in the 70's with my old boyfriend and some friends in his brother's van. I think it was in Painesville. Phil is an amazing person. I heard a story once somewhere that he was warming up for a performance and Ted Nugent was talking to someone in the wings and inquired who the unbelievable guitarist was. It was Phil. God truly blessed him with an amazing talent. We both learned to play on a Sears Silvertone which I think is great.

well, that's true, but only to a point...there are certainly times when Page really wows me, and yes, Keaggy is 167.523% better from a purely technical standpoint, however, my comment was meant less to raise specifically Jimmy Page or anyone else over Keaggy rather than to point out that people shouldn't bash excellent guitarists simply because they got famous.

Well the main difference is Keaggy can actually execute the licks he attempts. I've listened to hours of Page soloing and he doesn't play the licks cleanly for the most part. Page is great but when it comes to shredding or just virtuoso technique Keaggy is miles ahead.

you know, just because you're proud you've heard of phil keaggy and appreciated his obvious talent, you shouldn't just go and take a shit on all other guitarists. If you spent a little time actually listening to music, you might be surprised at some stuff. Jimmy Page was doing legit original shredding too in early 70's Zeppelin shows, way before it was the thang. Does he not deserve credit for artistic originality, just because he's so much more mainstream than Phil Keaggy?

Nuiceltico, there's nothing particularily "irish" about the harp. The instrument is ancient and was widely in use already in prehistoric times. As a result many different kinds of harps have evolved in many parts of the world. Wikipedia to the rescue! =) From the article on harps: "The oldest depictions of harps without a forepillar are from 4000 BCE in Egypt and 3000 BCE in Persia"
