I knew him also very well. We were good friends and did quite a bit of playing together. He was one of the most natural violinists I have ever seen or heard, almost as if the fiddle were an extension of his arms and body. Yes, he did have many serious personal "issues", and it is a consummate tragedy that his life ended so prematurely. This UTube clip brings back so much of the spirit of his playing and gives me such fond recollections of our friendship and musical affiliation.

any number of reasons, but for those who don't know, the hair is actually held in place at the tip by a small piece of cork(probably spelled that wrong) or other wood, and like other aspects of the instrument's construction, it is entirely a pressure based system. When the pressure on the cork or the tip becomes imbalanced due to a crack, the weather, some weakness, or potentially, rough treatment, it can come lose and display the "poof" of exploding bow hair witnessed above.

For those that don't know, David is a great player, a great teacher, and a very cool guy. If you have an opportunity to drum with him or take a lesson, it's well worth your time. I picked up the instructional DVD's from the website and they are high quality productions with slow-motion clips, great audio, and articulate direction with notation as well. Highly recommended!
