I love this piece. The simplicity, the tone, the arpeggios. Everything about this piece is great in my eyes. Phillip Glass is like something you either like or you don't. Very few people I have introduced are impartial to his work, it always seems to be a like or dislike opinion. I for one love repetition in my music when it is as beautifully crafted as this piece is. Many get bored and see little to be impressed by and that is perfectly fine. To argue over personal tastes is to waste time

I don't think you understand what's going on here. Take any random nonfiction story. There is a way you could tell this story that would make it sound more uninteresting than it is. Or, you could tell the same story with all the same true facts in a way that would keep a reader's attention. Form doesn't trump content; it's more like putting a nice frame on a painting with rough edges. Much nicer to look at. This is the art here. Nothing changes about the information presented.

I find reality television disturbing as well. 'There is a ton of art' Ummmm.... ok, didn't realize we measure art by weight... TAL is a interesting show, Ira is a talented storyteller. I'm not disputing that, I find misrepresent and editing people to be manipulative. Interpreting events for the viewer (i.e. moments of reflection) is dictating how events should be viewed. Storytelling in documentaries doesn't excuse misrepresenting those people in the documentar period.

I love TAL, but the one thing that used to bother me a little is that Ira would often talk so fast that I had to listen really hard to understand what he was saying. I imagine that most non-native speakers of English listening to him were left behind in the dust. He doesn't seem to blurt out rapid-fire sentences as often as he used to, so maybe he was aware of the problem and has compensated. Anyway, he's a brilliant storyteller and I always look forward to his show.

This American Life (radio version) is absolutely one of the best shows on radio or television. The storytelling of the vast majority of episodes draw you in to entertain, wonder, laugh, cry, all in the same hour. The Showtime series started off not being as good as the radio show, but the episodes "Two Wars" and "John Smith" rival the radio show. Hopefully that quality continues. I highly recommend you check it out.

Having seen this band many, many times live I can say that James has never had a flawless night...but then none of them have. The tremendous complexity and strain it takes to sing this live no one can understand unless one were to attempt this. Try it. Go sing DT for 3 hours and see where you rate. Just the same he is sick or vocally challeged alot! But he is a fucking trooper and ALWAYS gives 150%. After 20 years of listening they never bore or fail to amaze me.

XGL/AIGLX are much better approaches technically. The ideas behind Looking Glass could be implemented as plugins in Compiz, and if any of them are really useful then I don't doubt they will be. Right now, however, the Looking Glass project is essentially dead. Sun used it to drum up some quick publicity, but never really made it available to the community or put enough resources behind it to drive it forward. They could have done either one and it would have taken off, but they did neither.

Looking Glass looking pretty good. Unix system really kick ass. They are the best. I have been using 3D desktop for a while, from beryl to C fusion. They are very useful. I can really work on many thing at once. go back and for just by scrolling the mouse. Plus all the amazing effect. You know... windows is really something out of day. You just can't know how computer development has been by using windows.

This looks cool, but as far as I can tell, it doesn't solve any problems. Being able to flip a window and write comments on the back of it might be useful, but do you need a 3D environment to do that? No, this is fancy, but nothing more. As screens grow larger, we'll probably have more use for tiling window managers, like Ion. You won't want to maximize your web browser on a 30" screen, for instance, because the lines of text will be way too long.

Looking glass and the 3D effects have been around since around 2003, Apple wont have a working 3D desktop with effects until OSX 10.5 comes out. Linux thanks to compiz-fusion has had 3D effects for two years now.

Also, I do believe Glass, along with Rzewski, and Part, did not want to be mindless sheep themselves, for what would it matter if they composed in the Style of Bach, Stockhausen, or even Rachamaninoff? All they would find is limitation. That is why they are not conformists to the so-called norm. If we stuck with Bach, music would've been dead by the end of the 18th century, becoming monotonous. It is one thing to be taught, but there comes a point which transforms listening into composing music.

I don't mind Xenakis, Stockhausen, or Messiaen for that matter. However, I find more emotion in minimalist works such as Glass or Arvo Part, or John Taverner. What I love about Minimalism is that the emotion is not there, the work must be Deconstructed and applied to your human Being. It has no meaning unless you put meaning to it. Most of music has a pre-set meaning and interpretation, from Haendel to Xenakis. Minimalism is an interesting style, for you get out as much as you put in.
