What defines a comics mainstreamness though? Because, more people (as in quantity) buy mangas, so wouldn't that make it mainstream simply by the mass of people buying it? Or is the definition the general spread of the comics because more people in US and EU buy "mainstream" superhero comic books? 'Tis confuzzling!

I am about an equal manga and American comic book fan. I enjoy USA comics because of thier iconic characters, great artistic license, and underying societal commentary. That being said, manga is much easier to get into for the most part. If you get into a manga title halfway, all you have to do is pick up Vol. 1 and you're good to go. But if you pick up an issue of Spider-Man, you may need to do a ton of Internet research on the character before you fully understand what's going on.

hahaha One of my friends and I have this argument at least once a week. I' m not really a well-rounded comic art fan (I mainly enjoy manga titles like Naruto and Bleach that you guyz probably find lame) while she's a hard-core mainstream-European comic art fan (which is a bit weird cause she's japanese and I'm European). I can safely say we are both rather narrow-minded although we both admittedly read each-other's comic books behind each other's back :P Also Charles Schulz ftw!

Hmm... indeed. I have read a bit of Maus and Bone, I didn't read the whole thing though because it wasn't the style of art that I liked. Well, it probably is true that both mediums have their "gems" persay and their downfalls. I guess I just find the artwork of anime/manga more appealing. I find the culture of Japan fascinating in general, so that probably affects my judgment. I just was never a fan of American comics to begin with I suppose.

so what? i never said that all anime and manga suck. paprika is indeed a good title but the truth is that it's not the standard anime/manga, most of the market is unoriginal (just like with comics). now i'll pick out some comic gems i'm guessing you've never come across (just to point out the originality in comics): sandman, watchmen, maus, the crow, swamp thing, fables, y the last man, ghostworld, the walking dead, bone, it's a bird, preacher, blankets, the invisibles.

as a marvelite i have to say i hate superman but with reason. the guy can do too many things and has a cheesy do gooder personality and his only weakness is kryptonite. but i do hate a lot of marvel characters for similar reasons e.g cyclops is a big ol' nothing to me. i felt the diversity that alex was talkng about was flawed because both iron wok and hikaru followed the same basic formula. check out "even a monkey can draw manga", funny but so true.

I do enjoy quite a lot of manga titles but i don't like to voice it so much because the fanbase is made up mostly of idiots. I believe in credit where it's due but manga fans mistakenly go on about how deep, beautiful,realistic and complex things like deathnote are (almost as if they were brainwashed)and i could probably say the same for fans of classic superhero comics but I haven't had enough contact with them. i'm also getting sick of manga as an art style bc of all the imitation.

greeeat... -_- another manga fan who doesn't really know what they're talking about. firstly superhero comics aren't the be all and end all of american comics. secondly some superhero comics are very different from mainstream. thirdly anime/manga can be and usually is just as unoriginal as the so called continuations from america. your user name tells me your a naruto fan, this is a typical shounen title with all the cookie cutter characters and formulas thrown in with little skill.

I love manga/anime! I feel that it has more depth and originality than American comics. I mean Superman and such is great and all, but Superman has been going on for over 60 years and is being done by more than one author. So how are you supposed to keep track of every story? There's just so many different plot lines branching off of comics such as Batman, Spider-Man ,etc. Wouldn't you rather have something more original than another continuation?

very odd debate. I've been a manga fan very long time ago, fist of the north star, Akira and Ghost in the Shell days. It's just that now it seems to overwhelming much like how modern comic book continuity bothers a lot of new comic book readers. When a friend advises me "You should check out Naruto anime, but the Manga is the way to go." That's over 150 episodes or 40 volumes to watch and read. It's hard to really debate about this. Might as well through in Euro comics while your at it.
