Modular Homes - A Brief History
Modular homes have been given a bad reputation due to their inability to withstand winds during a major storm. However, these homes were originally made in order to give millions of individuals the opportunity to own a home, as well as to experience the joy of homeownership. Thanks to these innovative factory built homes, many people have indeed enjoyed owning their own dwelling, which otherwise may not have been an option. If one really wants to understand the modular home industry, then the first step is to know from where they originated.
The modular homes market began with the Sears and Roebuck catalog. Believe it or not, homes were available to purchase between 1910 and 1940 from their huge catalogue of merchandise. With only a deposit of one dollar, a person could choose the house plans that they liked the best. The home would then be shipped via railroad to the individual, at which point it became the responsibility of the purchaser to put it together! Some homes could have as many as fifty thousand pieces. As one can imagine, the instruction manual was probably the size of a novel.
Another time that manufactured and modular homes became very popular was after World War II. During this time, soldiers began to come home and they were looking for new homes, in which to start a family. The demand was so great that the housing market could not keep up. This is one reason that the modular home market began to explode and evolved tremendously. These homes offered low cost and an efficiency that was rarely seen with the mobile type homes on the market. Even now, some homes that were built during this time are still being used.
Modular homes are a great way for people with a small amount of money to enjoy the benefits of owning their own residence. No longer does one have to be concerned with the safety issues that were expressed in the past. Today, these homes are very economical and one can feel safe that their family will be protected in the style chosen. The new manufactured and modular homes are amazing in their modern design and provide safety for all who chose to invest in one.
